Last day of work for teachers?

Anonymous
Was yesterday the last day for teachers? When do they lose access to (or stop checking) their email, etc.? Thanks!

Teachers are not paid during the summer so there's no reason for them to check work email again until August. Some might but it's certainly not a given. Plus, when outside of the MCPS network, MCPS Outlook requires 2-factor authentication using an authentication app on the teacher's personal phone.

They don’t lose access over the summer to email. Some check email and do prep work for the next year but some don’t.

Just chiming in that the authentication app doesn't work on every staff member's phone and the county IT help desk is of little help, possibly because they are not authorized to do much on personal devices.

I assume most teachers have ten month contracts - so I guess they are not MCPS employees for two months. What is the start date for those two months? Is it the same for all ten month employees?

One year DC was helping a music teacher to wrap things up the week after the last day of school, and the teacher was off after that. Another time DC sent an email to another teacher the day after the last day (professional day/day for grading) and did not hear back as the teacher was gone for the summer.

This year, teachers' work days were 8/22/22 to 6/20/23.

Being a 10-month employee doesn't mean you aren't still an MCPS employee during the summer!! We just report to work for 10 months out of the year.

As for the question, June 20 was the last day for teachers, but many principals let us finish up and check out of school on 6/16.
