DS is rising 6th and will be going into advanced math. He didn’t take compacted math due to a technical issue entering the school after the cutoff. On the middle school web site, I see several math options, but which is his:
6th AMP6+ AIM |
| You have to talk to the MS counselor to figure this out. |

Unfortunate that they didn't manage compacted the way they were supposed to -- adding students through the first semester (and again in 5th) who the teacher noted as showing routine mastery of on-grade material. There's some catch-up, but the spiral nature of the curriculum has them re-cover most missed concepts in later years.
That said, it depends on what you mean by "advanced math". Was your DS centrally identified for the MS magnet math/science/cs lottery? If so, then AIM is supposed to be offered. They would probably need to help plan the transition, as he would be missing the 6th-grade curriculum (AIM covers 7th & 8th, leading to Algebra in 7th grade). If not, then, although the school has the ability to place him in AIM based on a review of the profile (they should be reviewing all kids' grades/scores & discussing at least the edge cases with the elementary teachers), it is more likely that he is slated for AMP6+, which covers the 6th curriculum and the first half of 7th. That (typically -- there are always exceptions/adjustments) leads to AMP7+ in 7th grade, covering the curriculum of the last half of 7th & all of 8th, and Algebra in 8th grade. Each option is advanced. Discuss with your 5th-grade teacher his known strengths & weaknesses and take that knowledge into a discussion with the MS Math lead to figure out if their planned placement for him is right. |
If he was in Magnet pool then he will be taking AIM. If not then it's likely to be AMP6+. If his MAP score was not 90 plus percentile then I think AMP6+ will serve him better. If he was closer to 99 percentile then AIM will serve him better. My son also did not take compact but he was in Magnet pool and took AIM. It was a right fit for him. I am a math enthusiast and I liked AIM content. Talk to counselors. They can help you with this. |

You can go into AMP 6+ without having been in compacted. no problem

We didnt provide input into math. He was above 90th percentile in math on MAP. |

| My DC was in compacted math in ES and is now a rising 6th grader. They have been placed in Math 7 (not AIM), and I like it that way. I don't want them in calc in 11th grade - heck, I don't care if they ever take calc unless it's really mixed with stats. Calc is interesting (I took AP BC myself back in the day) but really mainly of use for future STEM or social-science folks, and that is not DC. |
What is the difference between math 7 and AIM? |
AIM compacts 7 and 8 into a year. Our school Used to offer math 7 as an option for 6th graders who did compacted math but needed to slow down. However, next year MCPS made out school change it to 6+, which is a lot less desirable because it repeats the math 6 material. I don’t think math 7 in 6th grade is an option anymore. -DP |
AIM is supposed to cover Math 7 and 8. |
When I was in school, it was all about when you started Algebra that determined how advanced the course was. When do you start algebra with each of the options? Is it like this: Math 6: Start Algebra in 8th Math 6+: Start Algebra in 7th Math 7: ??? AIM: Start algebra in 6th? |
There are multiple pathways. These are the main ones, but there are other ways to get there too: Math 6 in 6th, Math 7 in 7th, Math 8 in 8th, and Algebra in 9th. Or, Math 6+ in 6th, Math 7+ in 7th, Algebra in 8th Or, AIM in 6th, Algebra in 7th, Geometry in 8th |
Those are a year too early Math 6/7/8 - algebra 1 in 9th Math 6+/7+ - algebra 1 in 8th AIM - algebra 1 in 7th |
