Unfortunate that they didn't manage compacted the way they were supposed to -- adding students through the first semester (and again in 5th) who the teacher noted as showing routine mastery of on-grade material. There's some catch-up, but the spiral nature of the curriculum has them re-cover most missed concepts in later years. That said, it depends on what you mean by "advanced math". Was your DS centrally identified for the MS magnet math/science/cs lottery? If so, then AIM is supposed to be offered. They would probably need to help plan the transition, as he would be missing the 6th-grade curriculum (AIM covers 7th & 8th, leading to Algebra in 7th grade). If not, then, although the school has the ability to place him in AIM based on a review of the profile (they should be reviewing all kids' grades/scores & discussing at least the edge cases with the elementary teachers), it is more likely that he is slated for AMP6+, which covers the 6th curriculum and the first half of 7th. That (typically -- there are always exceptions/adjustments) leads to AMP7+ in 7th grade, covering the curriculum of the last half of 7th & all of 8th, and Algebra in 8th grade. Each option is advanced. Discuss with your 5th-grade teacher his known strengths & weaknesses and take that knowledge into a discussion with the MS Math lead to figure out if their planned placement for him is right.
