Trying again after successful IUI

Anonymous
Anyone here care to share experiences of trying for #2 after having a successful IUI pregnancy? Did you have trouble the second time or do IUI again? I think we are members of a small group who had a successful first IUI for unexplained infertility and I'm just not sure how to go about round two. Curious how others have fared in this situation and what your doctor's protocol was.

Try naturally for a few months and then go to IUI?

Take a look at styledsnapshots’ saved stories on IG. Her first son was conceived easily with IUI. I believed they tried naturally for #2, but was only successful with IUI again. They tried naturally and with IUI for #3 but no luck. She’s currently in the midst of IVF.

We had a successful IUI after 18 months of nothing and then got pregnant the first try for #2. I think something about pregnancy reset my hormones. I BFed my first for a year and the first cycle after stopping, got pregnant with #2.

Got pregnant with #1 on third IUI after unexplained infertility. Got pregnant with #2 first month trying (no IUI).

We tried naturally for about ten months before our first IUI. Got pregnant with #1 on our second IUI. Tried for about 8 months for #2, did three clomid/trigger IUIs then a $2,000 Gonal F IUI and all four failed. Spent a month solidly depressed because we were out of insurance and out of money. Got pregnant that first cycle without any intervention.

I’m convinced the Gonal F had something to do with it but obviously no proof. We had male factor and despite ovulation tracking, supplements, fertility lube, I had never gotten pregnant naturally.

It was also likely no thanks to my clinic. Loved them the first time around, they were awful the second time. A few months ago right after finding out I was pregnant I got a letter that my doctor was no longer part of the practice. Another patient had told me she thought he was retiring. So kind of all makes sense that he and his team were checked out.

was your first period after you stopped breastfeeding? (unclear from the above)-- i'm currently 9 months pp from successful IUI but no period yet so trying to gauge the possibility I may may be able to conceive/ovulate without assistance when done nursing

I only know one person had a successful IUI. It was their 2nd child, the first conceived naturally.

I had 2 successful IUIs after first child born without intervention. Jump straight back into it without trying naturally. All told, had 5 IUIs, 3 resulted in pregnancies, 1 ended in miscarriage. So if it worked the first time seems likely it would work again.

Both of my kids (now 12 & 15) were the result of IUIs. I tried naturally for years with first and the first IUI worked. With the second, I didn't try naturally all that long before going back to IUI. Again, it worked first time. Best of luck!

I had first with IUI.

I felt that I could not handle twins and did not want to even risk it, so we did single embryo transfer IVF and had #2. We tried naturally maybe 6 months first.

Unexplained infertility.

We had 4 successful IUIs, all on the first round. Didn’t bother to try and conceive naturally as we just wanted to go with what we knew worked. We were in our late 30s/ 40s for all of them. Shady Grove. All our kids are about 2 years apart.

Did you have unexplained infertility, or a specific reason for going to IUI? That’s awesome that it worked for you four times!

I worked with a woman a few years older than me who came up to me right after I got married at 38 and said - go see an RE right now, don’t wait, tell them you’ve been trying for a year even if you haven’t. I took her advice, and am so glad I did. I was told I had unexplained fertility but if we’d tried for a while longer who knows? Maybe it would have happened in a year or two, but I think the IUI saved us from wasting time. I got pregnant 4 time, one sadly ended in miscarriage but I have 3 healthy little kiddos now!

Had an unexplained infertility diagnosis. Got pregnant with first kid on third round of clomid/trigger/IUI. Tried naturally for about six months for second kid then went back to the RE since I was over 35 by that point. Used the same protocol. Got pregnant on second round, but that ended in a missed miscarriage. Got pregnant again on the next round, and that was successful.

A good friend had an IUI baby for her first, conceived naturally for her second, had trouble conceiving her third but no RE in her area would treat her due to hormone levels, but then ended up conceiving naturally. Definitely a fluke she got pregnant the third time.
