P-town on the Cape and Plymouth in July-August

None, whale watching is a complete waste of money. I’ve done them in Washington state, Alaska and Iceland. No more.

You’re led to beleive you will see whales like the glossy photos on their websites and brooches. In reality, you’ll be on a boat with rough seas and be lucky to see the back of one whale.

Maine in July out of booth bay harbor. We did the boat ride to see puffins but saw tons of whales as well.

I’ve been on a tour from the New England aquarium in Boston in May and saw scores of them.

+1

There are at least four orcas (travfeling together) spotted today in Ptown, as we speak, OP. The cool part is, locals name the whales, and they have a certain way of differentiating.

Done whale watching out of Barnstable, MA and Juneau, Alaska. Saw tons of whales at both locations. We did the Barnstable tour twice. They go to the same water as P-Town boats- Stelwegen (Sp?) Bank. The boat ride from P-town is much shorter, but we were staying in Hyannis, which is closer to Barnstable. We went in midsummer, and it was great- lots of whales.

Saw a ton of whales out of Barnstable, MA one summer in July. My family is heading to Maine this summer and planning one out of Kennebunkport. The orca pod is giving me pause. Orcas are terrifying lmao

I will be visiting family in Wayland, MA this summer and would love to take my kids on a whale watch. Of the options mentioned so far, it looks like Plymouth would be the closest. Any others? (Wayland is a bit west of Boston.)

Growing up, we would go to Plymouth Mass for whale watching in July.

You sound fun.

We've done it in New England, Alaska and outside Seattle - we've seen whales breaching (including a group of Orcas), whales hunting and catching prey, and lots more than just the back of one whale. You've had some bad luck.

We went out of Boothbay Harbor in July and saw some whales along with other animals. Essentially it's a boat ride with a guide pointing out interesting things along the way. You might see whales or you might not. If you don't like boat rides (see pp above 21:46) don't bother with a whale watching tour. You will be most likely be underwhelmed.

Boothbay tours are great, I did the Cap'n Fish puffin tour and got a chance to see porpoises, puffins, and a couple obscure seabirds (gannet, tern, etc). Tons of fun.

Right? I feel like the more people “whale watch” them the closer we come to the inevitable point when they start eating us.

I've taken one out of Boothbay Harbor, too, and we didn't see any whales, so they gave us free tickets to use in the future. We didn't have time to use them but gave them to relatives who lived in the area. Dunno if this is standard practice or not but it was with whichever company we used that day (probably Cap'n Fish's).
