Anyone else being forced to use a vacation day or Juneteenth?

Contractor here being forced to use one of my vacation days for Juneteenth they can't/ won't bill for overhead. Anyone else in this situation. It's pretty messed up since I want to pick what I use my own earned vacation for.

Why wouldn't you use a vacation day for that? Most companies don't give you every federal holiday off like the feds. I don't understand what's messed up.

Yes this is common for billable jobs if the customer has the holiday off but the employer does not.

I used to catch up on paperwork or do proposal work on Fed holidays that I didn't have off when I was a contractor

It's not "messed up", it's very common if you work on-site as a contractor but your company doesn't have it off as a holiday.

Are you saying that your organization does not give you off for the Federal Holiday and the contract does not allow you to work because the COR is not there to supervise / you need to be on-site?

This is common also for Columbus Day and Veterans day as some organizations do not have this as a holiday.

But to answer your question - no - my organization does not force me to take a personal day for this

It’s not like it’s an important holiday. It’s a new one and hardly anyone celebrates it

He doesn’t want to take it off. He wants to work that day. But he can’t. So they’re forcing him to take vacation day rather than giving him
It off as a National holiday

That kinda sucks

Maybe because she is being forced to take the day off and doesn't want to?

Maybe that is the norm in contractors but it seems like they need to align their holiday schedule with the clients rather than make employees take a forced vacation day.

Large government contractors are their own entities with hundreds of clients. They can't align with everyone. Some companies with enough employees with have an onsite training day, some will give them proposal work, some will just charge overhead, and some will make them take personal days. It depends on the company, and on the individual's supervisor at their compay.

It really sucks especially if you don’t have many vacation days to begin with.

This is pretty common. We had this issue for MLK and presidents day a while back. Company solved it by having a holiday leave bank with partnof it flexible. But we still get fewer holidays than the feds.

I don’t think it’s unusual to not observe all fed holidays. I work in the private sector and only one of my 5 employers observed all fed holidays. Some don’t do Columbus Day, or Presidents’ Day etc. What is a little unusual is being required to take personal leave for that. At the companies where I’ve worked that didn’t celebrate all holidays, it was just regular work days.

It's pretty crappy to make you use a vacation day because you can't go into work. Have you asked if they could assign you work to do from home? I would keep asking how they are going to handle this if you aren't willing to use your vacation days for this. Make them come up with a solution.

You can't comprehend why someone is upset that they are being forced to use one of their vacation days when they don't want to?

I think you're having a reading comprehension issue here.
