Dating a woman with PCOS if you want kids

Anonymous
My gf is in her 20’s w/ PCOS. Does this have a big effect on your ability to have kids? We haven’t been dating that long, a few months. I definitely want to have kids though.

Not sure exactly what the impact is because I know women who have had kids with PCOS. Some through various levels of fertility treatment and some without.

Of course you never know what will happen. You could end up being the infertile one like my husband.

I have PCOS. I conceived two healthy kids, within a few months of trying, with the help of Metformin. At an advanced age, non less. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have PCOS. I conceived my kid at 38, no interventions. It just depends.

My wife has PCOS and we conceived our first month of trying at 31. Other people have had a very different experience, I'm sure.

My friend with PCOS took 4 years and a lot of fertility treatments to conceive their 1st child. For the 2nd child it took longer.

I will tell you this. If you can’t deal with a partner who is heavy, get out now. We are prone to being heavy and have it being next to impossible to lose weight. I have had periods of being thin, but with kids, life, and age, the weight came and stayed. The way I had been thinking was with a genuine eating disorder. Our bodies just don’t respond to food and diets in conventional ways. So if you are someone who finds overweight people “gross”, this may not work out for you in the long term.

Do you want your kids to be prone to PCOS?

Wow you are awful.

I’m thin (not that it should matter), two kids, PCOS all my life. It is treatable. The issue is when people don’t realize they have it.

The better question for OP is: do you love her? If PCOS is a deal breaker, I’d wager not.

Have pcos ( also lean...). Needed letrozole to induce ovulation but it worked ( as did clomid one round but then miscarried)

Worst case you may have to do IVF, but luckily PCOS generally responds well to IVF. Because we don’t ovulate often we have more eggs later in life. But most women with PCOS don’t have to go that far anyway.

It does affect it but I know a LOT of women who thought they were infertile and stopped using birth control, then got pregnant. I don't have PCOS but had 3 miscarriages and went on to have a healthy, beautiful child. Bumps in the road to conception are normal for even healthy young women.

However, looking at the big picture -- there are AMAZING things about being child-free. Carefully, critically think about *why* you want to be a parent. I am a mom and I chose that, but I stopped at one for a reason. I deeply miss/grieve my pre-kid life in some ways, and spend a lot of energy time and sometimes money to replicate it as much as I possibly can.

Can you get past the beard to conceive?

You really never know…I don’t have PCOS and didn’t ovulate after birth control pills. After 6 months I took clomid and got pregnant immediately. Second kid I was regularly ovulating and all hormone tests looked great but it took me 14 months to conceive (including trying clomid unsuccessfully, having an HSG and doing acupuncture).
