Let's say you were gifted a primary residence anywhere you choose to raise your family, in this case two parents and two kids. A fair amount of extended family including both sets of parents might like to visit. How big would the house be? Is there a point at which a house is too big for comfort, and if so, where would you draw the line? |
4k sq ft is my personal max.
We inherited a house that was 6500. We tried to live in it but it was just too big. Bought a house that was 2600, which is perfect, but we did finish the basement for an extra 1k sq ft of guest suite space. |
For 2/2, assuming I get all the spaces I want like a gym, room for a grand piano, actual comfortable bathrooms with a couple big tubs, lots of storage and utility/flex space, I'd say about 4,800 square feet. |
I grew up in the perfect size house. 3,500 ft2 with a huge covered with an outdoor dining area (west coast) and a deck. It was amazing. Little did I know then…. Now live in 2k and it’s fine bc I’m divorced but was tight when there were 2 adults here. |
I want my house. With another 10' bumped out front for a bigger dining and living room. A powder room and a sunroom twice as big as my current one.
We have 2500 sq ft. So 3000 is fine but it important how its distributed. |
2000sf. 800sf bedroom level, 800sf main level and 400sf finished basement (and another 400sf unfinished). Just a touch bigger than what we have now with a family of four. We had a bigger house when we lived elsewhere and didn't really like it - we weren't around each other as much.
We bump around the kids and use a Murphy bed in the basement when we have guests. |
We have 4 beds/3 baths in 2500 sq ft and it's fine but all of the rooms except for the dining room (random) and basement rec room are quite small. Perfect size would be same number of rooms, with most rooms being 50% bigger, so 3800 sq ft. |
I'm targeting 3000-3500 total for a family of 4. But layout is important...one just came on the market at 3100 but it wasn't a great use of space at all and still managed to feel cramped, so we passed. We've been in others that are the same size or smaller but it felt a lot more spacious. |
3500-4000sq ft |
We have 2600 sq ft for a family of 4 and it’s perfect. We have an unfinished basement that would add about 800 sq ft once finished, and we intend that to be a guest suite. So for us about 3500 sq ft would be ideal factoring in frequent guests. |
2500 above grade would be perfect for me. My house is 1900 and just a touch too small. I’d also want a first floor master, and if we’re fantasizing, a pool. |
1900-2500 is more than enough for me. |
We have 4400 sf and it’s a lot of house, but it’s perfect for large family gatherings - we have two guest suites. |
I like about 3500 for a family of four. But if parents and in laws visited a lot, I’d need way more space - a separate in law suite. |
My ideal home would probably be an 1800 sq ft bungalow with 2 bedrooms (+ a small office) and a killer layout, great outdoor space, and then a small (600 sq ft) accessory building with either a studio or a one bedroom where guests could stay.
Far more important than extra bedrooms for us is a work room for projects (I refinish vintage furniture, we do a lot of home projects) and a dedicated exercise space. Neither of which we'd want to put in a spare bedroom -- we'd prefer the work room to be unfinished, either in the basement or part of the garage, and my dream is for the workout space to be in a set-finished basement space with mirrors and a barre for DD so she can do ballet. |
