Our ES is and I'm wondering if all of FCPS has a policy on that or if it's just something our principal decided.

It’s all schools but were you upset about this announcement from your principal? Do you want your kid running around outside today?

Principals were alerted late yesterday that VA was in a Code Orange and that FCPS would monitor the situation and alert schools if it moved to Code Red. Canceling recess/outdoor activities was included in the description of what happens during a Code Red air quality alert.

Some areas are now in a Code Purple, which is higher index than a Code Red. It would be negligent to have children running around outdoors in this.

Dear Families,

As you may have seen on the news or a weather app, the National Weather Service has shared that the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Code Red Air Quality Alert in our area today. The cause is believed to be wildfires in Canada.

Code Red air quality is unhealthy for all groups. All FCPS outdoor physical activities are canceled from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. This includes, but is not limited to:

Recess.

Physical education activities.

Sports activities.

Marching band practice.

Mowing operations.

Further updates will be provided as necessary.

Ugh. I hope plans are not cancelled for you. That would be a huge letdown for the kids but better safe than sorry especially kids with existing issues.

I haven’t gone outside and the smoke is getting to me. Yesterday I noticed one room smelled like someone smoked in it.

Thanks. Haven’t heard from ours yet. Half are on FCPS fields and half on county fields.

It's county-wide, but ours had already told us they weren't doing outdoor recess.
