Can anyone recommend a meal prep service locally or online for the following situation:
Trying to help my mom eat more healthy and lose and then maintain her weight as she is diabetic. She's gained some weight recently and her labs aren't great. However, she has no concept of what foods are good for her or not. For example, she thinks having honey regularly every day in her coffee is good because it's not regular sugar. We are Asian and she still eats way more white rice that she should be even though she no longer has it 3 times a day. I thought maybe a month of a meal plan displaying the kind of foods she should be eating and the portions would be more illustrative or eye-opening. FWIW, she is generally healthy and walks everywhere so she's not sedentary. Thanks! |
Is she willing to change? I know that's not what you are asking but, unless she wants to change, down the road, it won't make any difference. |
Absolutely! She does. She’s the one that has reached out to me or asks me about stuff and of course I tell her but she forgets or is not consistent. She thinks she can do a few good things and that’s enough. Or that the fact that she walks so much can counter bad things in her diet. FWIW, she’s not an unhealthy eater, she’s not eating fast food regularly or sodas, etc. |
We did territory for a long time. But the quality went downhill and it was hard to find ones that were high enough calorie for me based on my activity profile. Now we do mighty meals and it’s way better. They also have lower calorie options my wife buys for herself. |
I like Cook Unity meals. They have a wide selection so you can filter down to whatever diet plan you like. |
You think honey in coffee is unhealthy? Wowwww |
I don’t think you read my post carefully. She has diabetes. So while honey has a lower glycemic index than table sugar, it still raises her blood sugar to unhealthy levels (for her) especially in the amounts that she’s using daily. |
You could try Vegetable + Butcher for a week or two? |
Another vote for Mighty Meals. I doing serious weight loss and they have meals that are less than 500 calories, and 50 ish G protein. And some with more calories and a different nutritional focus. Real food, just heat and go, and the nutrition is clearly marked. Plus, it tastes fresh and homemade. |
A bunch of us donated to get colleague mighty meals after a major surgery and transplant. I think they can tailor to many medical needs.
But this will not educate/teach your mom so much as substitute foods. Sounds like she could use some sessions with an rd. |
I don't see how meal prep will stop her from drinking all the honey and rice she enjoys. She has to want and will to eat less of it, or she won't stop.
Get her stevia or something for the coffee if she can't break the sugar habit. Encourage cream/fat/oil for flavor instead of sugar. |
Does she have a good endocrinologist who's associated with a nutritionist? If she's local to the DMV, I can highly recommend Ryse -- my Type 2 diabetic mom just started with them and they are great.
Also, does she have a continuous glucose monitor (like a FreeStyle Libre?) |
Second vote for CookUnity. They are delicious, lots of really healthy options, and they are ready in 2 minutes. Plus a huge variety. |
