TJ Math Research Statistics 1

What resources exist to get a preview of TJ RS1 this summer? Research Statistics 1 appears to be track of its own from the main Math progression. DC will be a freshman this fall, but keep hearing that RS1 is not a smooth sail even for kids good at algebra/trig. Trying to figure out how to make use of this summer time to be ready for RS1 in fall.

My DC is a current freshman. In Math 1 at TJ and got an A in RS last semester. It’s an easy class and as many may point out, my DC is below average in math for a TJ student.

PP- same boat here. DC is a freshman - M1. Found RS1 to be easy and very interesting. Taking RS2 next tear.

OP- there is a general myth that research state is hard. itsnot

I have 2 kids at TJ including a freshman. Older kid said they piloted a new RS curriculum last year for some sections of the then freshman (class of 2025). It was much easier (less content convered) than the traditional RS1 class from previous years and I understand for this years freshman class, all students have the new (easier) RS1 curriculum that is likely here to stay.

PP here. To clarify a little more. The “experimental” RS1 for class of 2025 used R (statistics programming language) and had no tests. So the kids that had traditional RS1 didn’t use R, had a lot more work and had tests.

Conveniently aligned with the entrance of the first class under the new equity-focused admissions policy

As others mentioned, RS1 is a very easy class. I would not worry about it at all.

My kid is learning RS1 and Algebra2 at same time now. All her teachers are greatest, especially her Algebra2 teacher, who is so nice, kind , and responsible to her students. RS1 really is not easy for students to have high score on unit test. If parents can tutor , maybe RS1 will be easier for TJ students. If students learned the precalculus earlier, it will be very easy for them to learn will in RS1.

PP- can u share who the algebra 2 teacher is? my kid will be taking it next sem. so curious.

op - RS1 is a fun course. my kid did well ( is below average in math at TJ) and went on to take RS2

A big shock to the parents and kids is how often the kids are getting a B and are 1 bad test away from a C.

Look, the honest and hard truth is if you want your child to get an A in this class, you need to either 1) have a child that is significantly gifted (not just regular NVa “gifted”), 2) have them pre-study it in the summer or 3) invest in weekly tutoring. The summer classes that pre-teach the TJ classes are really not that expensive and some are even available online.

It will not happen unless you as the parent invest in your child. This is not on the teachers. They are holding the students to a high standard to prepare them for what is coming next.

If you are okay with a C or a B, then don’t worry. But if the goal is a high GPA, get with the TJ program!

Why should this be a shock? They have had access to SIS since school started.

Isn't there a book that goes along with the class? Or at least some book guidance from the teacher?

I rarely understand the ask for tutoring if what is really needed here is the child learning how to learn. To do that, one just needs to spend time with the material, which can usually be found in one of many books. The child should read systematically from the book, and ask the teacher questions when stuck (usually after they've made some attempt to get unstuck on their own, by trying things, or googling something that doesn't make sense in the book).
