Masters, done. Fed job, done. What's next?

What future prospects do you see for a 24 year old who got state school undergrad, ivy grad and a staffing job in state department. Where could they be in 10 years?

They’ll have moved up the chain/around at State. There are thousands of us like him around the govt, some end up in high profile high level jobs after 20 years, most continue to be cogs in the big bureaucracy.

They’ll be a 34 year old, visiting Mars, wearing an outdated Apple headset, dodging calls from Mom back on Earth.

Should be aiming for Foreign Service. I know people who have made the jump from State GS scale to FSO.

They should become an FSO as soon as possible since seniority/tenure really matters for postings, pay, etc. Someone who becomes an FSO in their mid-20s can retire at 50 with a pension and still have a great 2nd career.

It depends on a lot.

What are their degrees in?
What's their goal/ ambition in?
Are they currently still in the fed job?

Hopefully in 10 years this person will learn that life is not about crossing some sort of checklist created by their parents.

I appreciate helpful replies, as well as attempts at humor and sarcasm.

This is someone my cousin met and trying to decide if there is long term potential. She is a dentist and only wants someone with high potential.
