JW awards night emails

Anonymous
Anyone else still confused from the multiple emails that were sent yesterday? And what kinds of awards are these, things like honor roll, etc.?

One thing my friend figured out last year - the number of emails you receive corresponds to the number of awards your child receives.

The awards are the Departmental Awards, SSL Award (? I think?) and GPA award.

If you got the one sent at 8:30 am that says "The awards night for selected eighth grade students is on Friday, June 9 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM in the auditorium at Richard Montgomery High school", then your kid is getting an award.

The corrected emails about the time actually being 4:30pm went to everyone. If you only got the corrections, you can skip the awards.

I didn’t get the 8:30 am email but did get an invitation email around 4 pm, in addition to the correction emails. Did anyone get an invite email in the afternoon but not morning?

I had the same emails (no 8:30 am email, correction email and 4 pm email). Ended up emailing the counselor and he confirmed that DC is receiving an award.

All MS and HS schools do. At a minimum, there is an award from MCPS for completing SSL hours in MS. Most schools also add in Honor Roll/GPA. There are some other external awards that the schools have to apply for (send in names of qualified kids).

Strange. I called the school and they confirmed DC is not getting an award. But we got the same three emails, which means they messed up a second time and didn’t send another clarification.

This is why I’m confused. DC has been on honor roll all three years and has completed SSL hours. But the office told me they’re not getting an award.
Anyway, I’d rather DC not go and risk missing an award than go and not get anything.

When my child was at JW (several years ago), there was one awards ceremony during the school day where almost every kid got an award...ssl hours, making honor roll at some point, etc. The evening awards were where each teacher could pick 1 student and give an award for any reason they wanted..improvement, kindness, academics...anything The teacher introduced each kid with short remarks. It was a very nice event and I hope they still do it. It recognized a broad range of kids not just the highest scorers.

We only got an SSL hour award and it came in the mail.

Question about the gold vs silver awards. Why were there well over a hundred kids who got gold awards (gpa 4.0) vs a lot fewer who got silver (gpa 3.5)? They just give out As to anyone so it’s easy to have a 4.0?

Not ours. They did not do an awards ceremony during the school day or in the evening.

I guess some kids try hard to not get that A.

There are awards for each subject and two kids are selected for each. Many kids get the SSL and honor roll awards. Then, there are three or four big awards at the end that only one kid will get.
