Satisfying healthy snacks

Anonymous
I eat lunch around 11 and get home around 4:30. Sometimes I'll eat some fruit in between that time but usually I don't have a chance to eat. So I get home and it's not dinner time but I'm starving.

This is where my diet usually goes wrong and I go for carby leftovers like pasta, or crackers. A handful of nuts doesn't satisfy at all when I'm hungry and ready for a meal, so if I eat something like nuts, I eat too many.

My dinners are generally homemade and healthy/balance, so the overeating and bad choices usually happen in that hour or two before dinner.

What are some heathy snacks that are actually filling and satisfying?

Can you eat dinner earlier? Or lunch later?

I can't eat lunch later. I'd have to cook dinner to eat it, which takes some time and by that time I just need to eat SOMETHING easy.

Nuts, cheese stick, kind bar...think protein

Apple slices with just a dab of peanut butter
Carrots and hummus
For the nuts, can you pre-portion them, so you don’t over eat? Like, make up a week’s worth of single serve baggies? Or try eating pistachios because shelling them slows you down.

I've tried that, or buying single serving bags, but the fact is, a single serving just doesn't fill me up or even take the edge off.

In your shoes there is no way I could be okay with something you'd call a "snack." I would need to eat at least a small meal, and more likely it would be one of my big meals of the day (and then I'd eat a very small portion at dinner). It would entail leftovers or maybe something like a wrap I purchased from Trade Joe's. But for me you plan of just having a good snack and then a normal sized-dinner would be completely unrealistic.

Have a big apple with the serving size of nuts. Or an apple with a non-sugary cereal. It won't be to everyone's taste, but I like plain shredded wheat (the mini size) eaten dry along with an apple. It's something crunchy but without the salt, fat and other stuff in processed snacks.

I think this sums up my problem. I need a meal at that time. But then I want to enjoy my dinner that I cooked, so I over eat with the 2 combined.

I actually do like shredded wheat but always forget about it - that's not a bad idea.

Greek yogurt with fruit and some toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top. You can even add a teaspoon of sugar (just 18 calories) to make it a little sweet.

I do eat Greek yogurt with lunch almost every day. Never thought to add seeds!

Sugar snap peas, raw and straight out of the bag. Celery and carrots.

Can you prep dinner ahead of time? I have a similar schedule (lunch usually at 11), and I eat as soon as I get home from daycare pickup. Almost all my dinners are prepped in advance, either on the weekends or the night before. If I leave it to night of I do not make healthy choices because I’m so incredibly hungry.
