Is NoVa really more conservative than southern MD?

People here act like NoVa is full on MAGA but it’s still a deep blue area and is the sole reason Virginia goes blue in presidential elections

It’s variable by city and neighborhood. Arlington and Falls Church are fully Democrat, Fairfax County is a mix, Loudoun is a mix but more conservative than I’m comfortable with.

It’s a swing area that looks after its interests like any other.

If Trumpists are in charge trying to dismantle the administrative state and curtail voting rights, it swings deep blue.

If Democrats are in charge trying to dismantle zoning, ignore borders, and eliminate merit admissions, it swings back to the center.

Southern MD is absolutely 10x more conservative than NoVA. You’ll still see Confederate + Trump flags flying in SoMD on rural roads or on pick up trucks. SoMD is hardcore MAGA and had a long history of Confederacy sympathies

Not the sole reason. Richmond and large swaths of Hampton Roads help, too.

Fauquier, Culpeper, Orange, Caroline, and the Northern Neck are more politically similar to southern Maryland.

Arlingtonians are DINOs. They call the police when they see a Black person in the Whole Foods.

Southern MD and the Eastern Shore

How many Republicans are in the MD state legislature v Virginia's legislature?

All 5 of Charles County's elected legislator's are Democrats. St. Mary's County all Republican. Calvert has one Dem and one Rep. Anne Arundel is all Democratic as well (has not always been so).

The most conservative parts of Maryland are the Eastern Shore, the western part (Garret County) and north of Baltimore (Cecil and Harford Counties).

SoMD and Eastern Shore are more conservative than NoVa. May be comparable to some of the rural parts of VA. The difference is they have little political influence in Annapolis or in federal representation. Conservatives in Southern and Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore are more overwhelmed by the Democratic areas of the state, and the staunchly leftward pull of Montgomery County which is much more so than NoVa.

Complete exaggeration.

Last thing I associate with NOVA is conservative thinking. You have to get out of NOVA for that.
