Moving teams to play different position

Anonymous
Has anyone moved teams because they didn't like the position their child was playing? My kid is disappointed in the position the coach assigned him and wants to find a team that will let him play his desired position. Is that something we should indulge?

It is definitely a reason to move if your kid is stuck in one position and not developing as a player.

People do it ALL the time. Its supposed to be for fun. If your kid isn't having fun b/c he's not playing the position he likes, then switch.

Is your son a defender/goalkeeper? In my experience, coaches really don’t like to let them switch.

You have to tryout elsewhere without mentioning it. That's what DD did to get out of goal. Two years in a row coaches at her original club lied to her. She starts in the field now and would have on her old team, they just didn't have another option at gk

This is not for soccer but same idea. How do you bring this up at tryouts? In other words, how do you shop for the desired position?

Ask the coaches what posititions they are looking for most.

If your kid is trying to get out of a specialized position, tell them to never mention that they play it.

It would help immensely to know the age of the kid, and the sport.

Best way to do this tends to be word of mouth- and general knowledge of what positions teams are looking to fill. Which isn’t always easy….

There is really not ever a guarantee unless specifically discussed ahead of time with the coaches (and depending on the age group, demanding- or even angling- to play a certain position at a tryout can be frowned upon).

OP here- kids is 12. He seems to be in a position that won’t advance his skills for that sport. I had the fear that angling for a specific position before tryout won’t go over well.

What's the position? No one will figure out who you are!

If he or she is 12, are they going to 11 v 11 next year in soccer? If they aren't happy as a defender, maybe your coach is prepping them to be a holding or attacking mid? Have you asked?

Is it baseball? And he plays outfield? That’s my guess? If so, outfield is super important but he should get reps in the infield and potentially get to pitch also if he can at least throw strikes. If he likes the team has he asked what he needs to do to get reps? My son had success asking for IF reps at 12U (got reps in practice and in easy games). The better hitter he is, the more leverage you will have BTW. IME.

Often changing to another team - getting a look from different coaches- CAN possibly help. But, I’d never ask about playing a particular position at tryouts (will make you look like a PITA).

Is it basketball? Kids who grow early get pegged as bigs, never develop the skills required to play small and then are discarded if and when other kids catch them in height. The only thing they can do is work on their outside shooting and handle on their own time.
