If people don't like what's happening in the city, it's important to write to your Councilmember, as well as all the at-large Councilmembers including the chair (the at-large councilmembers and council chair represent the whole city). Politely tell them how you feel and ask for them to address the problem. Even write to your ANC rep. If enough people push our elected officials to take crime seriously, it’s possible we’ll actually see some progress in that direction.
We’ve recently seen the Council reverse course on school resource officers (police) in schools. In 2021 the Council voted unanimously to remove the officers. In 2022, they voted 8-5 in favor of removing the officers. This month, they decided to keep them. Public pressure can work. |
| My CM is Charles Allen and I haven’t bothered to contact him because I feel like I would be wasting my breath. I’ll email Mendo though. I am actually contemplating leaving the city because I no longer feel safe. |

One thing that can't be overstated is how much non-traffic crime is aided by the city's decision that it's 100 percent cool and protected to not have a real license plate.
Any crime you can imagine is that much easier if you can follow it up by hopping in a car that can't be identified. |

I'd offer that it's more important to call 311 to report blighted properties and get them developed.
Violent crime happens exponentially in areas that are blighted and under developed. It's more important to make crime uncomfortable. |

The Post did a survey: 3 out of 4 feel safe in their neighborhood.
There is no crime problem in DC. The Post said so. |
Twice this year I’ve email CM Frumin and my very progressive ANC rep about the increase in property and violent crime in our once sleepy neighborhood. Total crickets in response. These are not serious people. |
| People who are not concerned about crime should not be labeled "progressive." It's the opposite of progress to let our city deteriorate in this way. They can build all the glossy apartment buildings they want, but no one will live here if the city is not safe. |
I think the absence of law enforcement, standards, etc. IS their vision of progress, but reality will hit hard when enough of the tax base leaves that there's no money to pay for their programs. You need to keep the people who pay tax happy and unafraid. |
They are focused on equity. They are not focused on your safety or your quality of life. Your life doesn’t matter. |
I’m not sure what your ANC can do. Kind of a powerless body, except in saying no to proposed things. Their “yeses” are rarely listened to. But CM Frumin is just a mess. The guy seems legitimately confused by the legislative process and how the city works (or doesn’t). He is not sure about crime other than M0AR POLICE. He clearly lacks the intellectual curiosity necessary to figure out the why we have an increase in crime, why we have this level of crime despite having some of the highest level of police per capita in the country, and what can be done about it other than blindly throwing money at the problem. Do we need 100 more officers? To do what exactly? What current policies can we change to address crime now (since training more officers will take time)? |
You would stand a better chance of a response if the crime was pickleball related. That’s one of his priorities. |
His first proposed legislation was the Old People Are Cool Act. I thought it was a joke when a friend told me. |
Doesn't mean you should stop contacting them regarding crime concerns. Don't expect them to respond to you, but I don't see the downside to getting your concerns written down somewhere. |
| Huh, as if the Council Members give two cents about you being uncomfortable with crime in the city. What crime? The city's safer than every. You are showing your privilege. All sound familiar? It is, and it is the party line if you are a good little Democrat. And by the way, progressives are the same as democrats, deal with it. The Council has an agenda to carry out, they fooled everyone into electing them and they are going to do what they want to do, whether you like it or not. |
That’s funny. The ANC commissioners along Connecticut Avenue seem to know no limits on all their awesome powers on issues they actually care about. |
