Are you jumping ship to private and why?

I think I can middle school may be the end of my child's education at mcps. I had moved to my neighborhood for better schools but the issues at the high schools seem untenable. Unfortunately, I have 2 kids so it may be major $$$

What issues at the HS are you speaking of? And are the issues truly widespread or just things you’re hearing about?

my kid was in private through 6th. 7th grade in MCPS was a dream. But 8th, 9th, and 10th have been horrible. If I could afford larger schools with more kids, I would send him back to private. But I can only afford the smaller schools and those are too socially stifling.

Considering a move to private for 7th grade next year for my son. My other son hits middle school in 3 more years and he'll likely head to private then too. I'm in the DCC and throught about moving East but while the problems there are different, they still aren't what we want for our kids.

Which neighborhood, better than what, and which issues at which high schools?

I don't live in MoCo but enjoy complaining about these things because I don't feel I should have to pay for your kid's school.

No, we’ve been very happy with the experience our 3 kids have had. Two of them are in college and were very well prepared for rigorous majors at great schools.

Could you elaborate on why 8th to 10th have been horrible?

Oh, boy! More backdoor private school recruiting!

Personally, no, even though I know some parents have complained about BCC, our cluster's high school. Our budget is planned for college tuition for several kids, not private K-12 for any of them, and honestly, I feel my middle schooler will be able to navigate BCC decently.

You don't need to share here if you don't want to, but I think you need to examine carefully whether the issues present in your cluster's high school are likely to impact YOUR child particularly - not every issue impacts every child, some kids are more vulnerable than others to various things. And then there's the financial planning aspect. My oldest is in a private university that costs 85K a year (with merit aid, thankfully), so you need to factor in the costs of college.

I’m realizing that rumors on DCUM have been costing parents millions of dollars.

Don’t believe everything you read.

Exactly.

Just because you move to a better area with richer families, surprise, the schools aren't any better. It really depends on the principal, admin and teachers your child has at the time as well as the other kids in their class.

We considered private but the math curriculum at most privates was much slower and the cost was more than we could handle.

Your kids can go to a state school and/or you can move to a cheaper house.

We moved to a W cluster 20+ years ago, before we had any kids, for the schools. Fast forward to now, our teens had classes with 30+ kids in MS, 35+ in HS, and daily fights that securrity tried to handle as best they could, and we had enough. Both are in private
