MCPS SPED teacher…

Anonymous
I am currently a special education teacher in two elementary schools. I have been involuntarily transferred to two schools for the next school year. Being at two schools has been extremely stressful and particularly difficult because of mental health issues. I am trying to get a full time position at one school. I know that Human Resources is just interested in filling the positions. I’d like to know if anyone is in a similar situation and can offer any suggestions on how to resolve this. I’d also like to know if there is a county or state formula that provides details for special education allocations. It seems very arbitrary. Thanks for any help!

Look for another job in a different district. Every district is hiring special education teachers. Then tell HR you are going to quit unless you are assigned to only one school.

Are you using Careers to look for a new position? SPED allocations are based on # of students. It sounds like your ES don’t have a lot of SPED students, or enough to round up a part time spot to full time.

It's very common for special ed teachers to be assigned to more than one school. It's based on the need of students and many need 1.5 teacher hours or 0.5 teacher hours which is why you may have more than one school.
I know a speech teacher who had three schools.

MCPS does not call special ed positions SPED and sped is often used as a slur these days. You are a special ed resource teacher or para or other special ed specialist.

What?
Everyone says SPED at my MCPS school

With the SPED teacher shortage, I’m surprised you are having trouble staying at one school.
Are you being very picky about location? How much experience do you have? Good SPED teachers are hard to find these days.
Do you enjoy doing paperwork? It feels like 80% of the job is filling out paperwork

There are more SPED teachers than ever now. The problem is 3X as many kids are requesting services, especially in UMC areas.

You can apply to any job you want and there are so many SPED positions open. If there’s nothing open that you’re interested now, you still have a couple of months.

Search MCPS Careers for a 1.0 position, there should be tons, and apply. They base allocations on projected student numbers but I know from experience that it’s at best a ballpark and they always think you can do more in less time than is realistic. But you should be able to fine something 1.0 in Careers, there are many vacancies.

I've seen some openings for 1.0. The HSM is coming up.

No one says sped at our school. It's a derogatory term for kids in special ed. Avoid.

+1

I’ve taught at 2 MCPS schools in the last 11 years and both used SPED. I was at a MCPS school before that where the RTSE hated the term, but all her teachers used it anyway.
