Mississippi bans trans student from graduation because she refused to wear "boy clothes" under gown

Anonymous
So it's not just about medical decisions - cons are coming after trans kids for the clothes they wear, even under a cap & gown. This is a public school, folks, not a private one. A judge said the student had no right to wear what she wanted because it was a voluntary ceremony.

Cons are just plain mean. And rigid. WTF cares what a kid wears under the gown anyway? And forcing girls to wear white dresses in the first place???

I'm sure the right wingers will come back and say judge was right, it's not a constitutional protection. i don't care. It's just plain mean, spiteful, and rigid and it makes your side look petty and small.

L.B. had selected a dress to wear with her cap and gown. The lawsuit said L.B. had worn dresses to classes and extracurricular events throughout high school, including to a prom last year, and she should not face discriminatory treatment during graduation.

King told L.B.’s mother that the teenager could not participate in the graduation ceremony unless L.B. wears ”‘pants, socks, and shoes, like a boy,’” according to the lawsuit.

Clark wrote in court papers Friday that taking part in a graduation ceremony is voluntary and not a constitutionally protected right for any student.

Yep, who cares. Move on.

If it’s voluntary, follow the rules or don’t go. Simple.

The judge is an idiot. It doesn’t matter whether the commencement ceremony is voluntary. It’s still a local government event so the government needs a legitimate reason to be petty prudes.

Thanks for confirming my bias against conservatives as lacking human empathy and being rigid.

The Trump-nominated judge was confirmed by the McConnell Senate in the lame-duck session on Dec. 1 2020 in case anyone remembers the 2016 McConnell argument that in an election year, the general election voters should decide which Presidential nominee gets to name the next Justice.

Republicans are dirtbags.

I assume everyone on this thread is against dress codes in HS. I am personally but if you believe schools should have a dress code then I don’t see how you can argue that this kid can wear whatever they want to graduation.

I’m fine with schools not having explicit dress codes. They’re often misogynistic anyway. My children’s high school (not in DMV) doesn’t have an explicit dress code. They have guidelines that include respectful and decent attire (no hate messages, no exposed private areas, shoes and clothes appropriate for being active on PE days). We just got the full packet of graduation information for our senior, and there’s literally no mention of what to wear under their graduation gowns.

I graduated in the 1990s and the trend my senior year, at least at my school, was to wear pajamas under our graduation gowns. I don’t know why and I thought it was dumb but all my friends wore pjs so I went along with it. Some of the teachers and admins made comments about how they were surprised we didn’t want to dress nicely for such an important day, but didn’t try to forbid it and turn it into a power struggle.

Who cares what’s under their gowns? Who cares if trans kids want to express their gender identity through fashion? I thought all the band were about protecting kids from irreversible medical treatment, not about trying to keep them from being trans. This is purely transphobic.

This young person wants to create a big drama at the graduation.

In the south land, we just don’t do that.

We’ll mind our states and you mind your own.

Hilarious. It’s not this person who is starting big drama. No one would see what they are wearing under their gown. It’s ridiculous.

I am pro uniform or stricter dress code even in public schools. But I’m also ok with any student wearing any acceptable item from the uniform/dress code, regardless of their gender.

Also, I’d never raise a trans child in the south. Yes I know, some people “have no choice” but I’d find a way.

They attended that school dressed as a girl for years including school events and prom, then the school superintendent makes this decision last minute before graduation and it's the child, not the superintendent, who wants to "create a big drama"?

Hm, the facts of the story do not fit your narrative. Clearly the school superintendent is making a drama at the last minute.
