"1923" Catholic horrors

Anonymous
I'm watching "1923" (a Yellowstone prequel). It highlights several horrors/cruelties/abuses/murders by the Catholic Priests, Nuns, and Missionaries. Is this total fiction, hyperbolic but somewhat true, or 100 percent fiction.

I like the show, and I find the behavior awful. I wonder what it was like back then? Thoughts?

The Catholic church is no different to any organization where people use their position of power to abuse other people. IMO, a lot of sadists are in organized religions that like to control people.

And I say this as a long time church goer.

The movie chose a Catholic storyline, but that is a tiny sliver of the atrocities of this US government program to assimilate Native American children. Catholic orders ran about 20% of the government’s abusive schools. Others were run by other religious organizations and private contractors. I’m sure the government would love for this to be just another Catholic bashing chapter in history. Don’t let them off the hook. Accountability across the board.

Didn’t we have this discussion already on the original 1923 thread?

It’s drama OP. You don’t have to watch if you don’t want to

You think the US Government is catholic bashing? The Democratic President is Catholic. So are several Republican Supreme Court Justices.

This is OP. I didn't see the other thread. I actually like the show and it created a genuine interest for me. FYI, I identify as a Christian. I just was curious about that and have found the responses intersection. (Specifically that the abuse wasn't just at Catholic schools.)

I think he/she/they are saying that there are multiple entities that were behaving that way back then.

1. Please cite evidence that, in 2023, “the Church still hides and moves priests.”

2. The 1960’s were 60 years ago, 3 generations. Do you seriously contend that Catholic “unwed mothers homes” (although you don’t say the one your neighbor was in was Catholic) were uniquely the sole institutional places in the 1960’s where inmates “got the crap best out of them?”

3. The Catholic Church, via Catholic Charities, has long been the largest provider of social and charitable services in the US after the government.

5. So you want a religious test for public office? I think the US got rid of those a little while ago — I believe it was 1789. Maybe you should lobby for a Constitutional convention.

Oh Yeah, the Catholic Church is fine now. All the bad stuff happened long, long ago. /S
