Middle school boy: what trendy clothes to buy?

Anonymous
I would appreciate links or names. T shirts, pants, shoes, hoodies, anything. I have a 13 yo DS who wants to be trendy and stylish but is not always sure what he wants.
What do kids wear now?
He has t shirts with band names, Uniqlo sweatpants and jeans… where else should he look?

The kids my son hangs out with mostly wear plain items, no graphics. Brand doesn’t matter and logos seem frowned upon. My kid wears solid, dark-colored t-shirts and jeans. Jeans are loose, either plain or ripped. Plain hoodie or unbuttoned plaid flannel or Oxford shirt. Converse or Vans. Most of his male friends have a version of this; only one seems like he work hard to distinguish himself with some quirky styles. The girls have more distinctive, trendy styles.

Nike clothing. Lots of kids wear Air Force 1's, AJ1, or various AirMax Sneakers(Sneakers are at least $100)
Sweatpants. My kid rarely wears jeans, but he's an athlete.

Given that it's mid May, I wouldn't drop a ton on clothing right now given that he'll be out of school and lounging in shorts/tees in under a month. Start thinking of what he wants/what kids will wear when school starts back up.

My middle schooler wears cargo pants and hoodies all winter long. Now I'm spring it's basketball shorts and hoodies. Soon it will be basketball shorts and graphic tees with favorite movies/music, or under armor athletic shirts.

As for specific brands, we do mostly shorts from the UA outlet. Hoodies are either UA brand or cheap Hanes ones from Amazon. All of his friends pretty much dress the same.

My 9th grader has worn the same thing pretty much since 6th grade, except the logos have gotten smaller. Now he wants things with as small of a logo as possible.

Black or grey athletic shorts. Brand doesn’t matter. In middle school he would wear the ones with huge logos but now he won’t.

Solid athletic tee. Any color. Usually a variety of Nike, UA, Champion and other brands I see without logos now.

Solid hoodie most of the year. Same as above. Tiny logos.

The only prints he likes are ones of his own sports teams.

We are in an UMC neighborhood and he has no interest in sneakers. Some kids are really into them. Many others wear what is comfortable. He has worn different running shoes and bases his choice on comfort.

It probably depends on the kid. Mine does not care. Any brand shorts or jeans, Addidas sneakers and athletic shirts or fun ones with a hoodie.

DS wears athletic shorts and plain tees year round, UA or Nike preferred, or t-shirts from his sports teams or vacations. He’s very into sneakers (Nike, his favs are his Jordan’s) but mostly wears crocs with tall Nike socks and so do his friends. Plain hoodies.

I think it is sad that kids feel that they need to dress alike to be considered trendy or popular. I wonder what happened to individualism. In my school in the early 90's the kids that dressed a little differently were often thought of as cool and rebellious. Now it seems like it is social suicide if you dare to wear anything other than plain sports brand clothing.

Maybe the kids just want to be comfortable and not think about it—hint! They are boys, so yes, comfortable and no effort. But, it’s not “social suicide” to wear something different. Hint! The other boys don’t care about your “individual” outfit.

I think DS just wants to be “cool”, it’s kind of touching to me. Whatever he wants to wear as long as it’s not outrageously expensive!

Thank you! My DS decided he doesn’t want to wear crocs anymore but I will tell him to look at other stuff
