Really enjoyed this movie. Great reviews. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are incredible. It's free on Amazon Prime if you are looking for something to watch this weekend!

We enjoyed it too and all the 1980s and basketball stars shoutouts.
It’s a movie about Nike and shoe sales battles, not really Michael Jordan. |
I saw it in the movie theater last month. Matt Damon and Viola Davis gave the best performances, very moving. I normally like Affleck but thought he was playing a bit of a cartoon character in this one. |
I enjoyed it - it was like we GenXers went into our parents’ attics and brought out all the toys. I think Phil Knight is supposed to be goofy, but I did have a slight issue with the Matt and Ben scenes, because what I saw was Matt and Ben, and not so much Phil and Sonny. |
Agree! It’s so fun and interesting to learn that Nike was hesitant to go all in with basketball shoes! Little did they know how many people now would buy multiple basketball shoes just to collect and admire. My son keeps a pair of Air Jordans he was given when he was 10 yrs old on a shelf. He wore them once maybe. But he loves them.
My husband and I happen to be watching Last Dance on Netflix- it too is so entertaining and will appeal to the Gen-Xers. So many cultural references. I recommend to anyone with even a small interest in basketball or sports. |
I love this movie. And the soundtrack is so fun! |
Watching the movie now. The soundtrack is great. GenXer here. I had a pair of blue with white swoosh Nikes. Nike were sorta geeky until basketball players started wearing them. I seem to remember controversy about kids getting slain by people stealing their Air Jordan's, and there was controversy about how expensive they were. |
I enjoyed it even though I don't think it's a great movie. I was a MASSIVE Jordan/Bulls fan in the 80s, so I was very primed to enjoy the nostalgia even though I was really young in 1984. Viola Davis was great but also James Tennon really nails James Jordan. They did an amazing job showing how Deloris ran the show and took no $hit, while James was just the super proud dad who was thrilled to be along for the ride. I'm also glad they chose not to show Michael -- at first it felt like a cop-out but at the end when they showed real footage of MJ, I was glad -- any actor would have done him a disservice.
That said, I though Damon/Affleck/Bateman were a bit hammy, and I found the soundtrack incredibly heavy handed. No subtlety there, it was literally just "here's the Top 40 for the year 1984." Still enjoyed it though. It's not winning anyone any Oscars but it was a fun watch. |
She did more than that, she completely changed the way that all sports stars thereafter were paid for product endorsements, forever breaking that glass ceiling. |
Yes, thank you, I also watched the movie that is the subject of this thread, but thank you for explaining it to me -- here I was trying not to just describe the plot/point of the movie to people who might not have watched it. Thank god you're here! |
F you |
Plot? There’s no spoilers it’s what legit happened. 😂 |
I liked it. I had listened to the Pop Culture Happy Hour review of it which was pretty negative, so I kind of had that perspective in my head. But as someone who was a teen in the 80's, I couldn't help but love the cultural references. And Viola Davis was wonderful. And the scene with Matt Damon and Chris Messina had me rolling on the floor. |
Loved it. and they wisely steered it away from Jordan (did we ever see his face?) to Nike. |
Yes, a movie based on real life still has a plot. Many people watching the movie won't know this detail from the history (I didn't, until I watched the movie). It's probably one of the reasons they made the movie. It's weird to feel like you are educating someone about the plot of a movie they obviously watched, though. |
