Air movie about Michael Jordan/Nike on Amazon Prime

I thought that despite everyone’s best efforts, the film was very meh.

This movie has a lot of sole. It’s a shoe-in for an Oscar. I say all this tongue-in-cheek

I'm not sure they put in that much effort? All the main performances except Viola Davis felt pretty lazy to me. Damon and Affleck, in particular, are just kind of skating by on their existing goodwill and letting the wigs/costumes (and in Damon's case, his paunch) do the work. The soundtrack felt like someone said "Hey, remember how much Boomers liked the Forrest Gump soundtrack? That, but for Gen X, and a much less ambitious movie." Like the music didn't feel like it was thoughtfully applied to scenes based on how well it suited them. It was just a playlist that they randomly assigned to different parts of the movie. Lazy!

Not really on the soundtrack: https://variety.com/2023/artisans/news/ben-affleck-1984-playlist-inspired-air-movie-soundtrack-1235579287/

That article was interesting but actually kind of backs up the theory that the music is just a playlist of songs they liked and not super thoughtfully put together, since it started with a literal playlist Affleck gave her. And then also it sounds like often their first or second choice was not available or couldn't clear, so they would go to an alternate and were just looking for something from the era that worked. Also, stuff like "We played Time After Time when Sonny is waiting to hear back from the Jordans" is really on the nose.

It's just an approach to adding soundtrack that feels kind of cheap to me.

Lol. I get you, PP.

Anonymous wrote:I enjoyed it even though I don't think it's a great movie. I was a MASSIVE Jordan/Bulls fan in the 80s, so I was very primed to enjoy the nostalgia even though I was really young in 1984. Viola Davis was great but also James Tennon really nails James Jordan. They did an amazing job showing how Deloris ran the show and took no $hit, while James was just the super proud dad who was thrilled to be along for the ride. I'm also glad they chose not to show Michael -- at first it felt like a cop-out but at the end when they showed real footage of MJ, I was glad -- any actor would have done him a disservice.

That said, I though Damon/Affleck/Bateman were a bit hammy, and I found the soundtrack incredibly heavy handed. No subtlety there, it was literally just "here's the Top 40 for the year 1984."

Still enjoyed it though. It's not winning anyone any Oscars but it was a fun watch.

If you want a brilliant, subtle, expansive soundtrack for the '80s era, watch The Americans.

+1

The music was terrible and added nothing to the movie. I thought Viola Davis and Chris Messina were good. I would love to see Jason Bateman not just play Jason Bateman. And I don’t know who Ben Affleck’s dude is in real life but they played like a goofy buffoon.

She did more than that, she completely changed the way that all sports stars thereafter were paid for product endorsements, forever breaking that glass ceiling.

Yes, thank you, I also watched the movie that is the subject of this thread, but thank you for explaining it to me -- here I was trying not to just describe the plot/point of the movie to people who might not have watched it. Thank god you're here!

Plot? There’s no spoilers it’s what legit happened. 😂

Yes, a movie based on real life still has a plot. Many people watching the movie won't know this detail from the history (I didn't, until I watched the movie). It's probably one of the reasons they made the movie.

It's weird to feel like you are educating someone about the plot of a movie they obviously watched, though.

Its not in the plot of the movie. It's something the PP who originally mentioned it (me)learned after reading about Doloris AFTER seeing the movie.

It's was alright. It just seemed a little bit 'off', and you could tell it was an Amazon or Netflix movie....

I don't know what it is with Netflix and Amazon. The majority of their movies stickout like a sore thumb in terms of pacing, cinematography, dialogue, sounds, etc. You know when you are getting a Hollywood knockoff film from Amazon or Netflix. Air felt the same way.

It’s a snooze fest.
