Pain during egg retrieval in natural cycle IVF

Anonymous
This week my egg will be retrieved for the natural cycle IVF. I am very nervous as to how painful it will be. I know I will take couple of Valiums, but still how much would it hurt? And will I be able to drive and function normally that day?

don't be nervous about the pain, it is just one sting like getting an immunization or an injection - that's how it was for me. and you hardly care if you take the valium (valium is not influencing pain perception it just takes care of anxiety and relaxes you) - one tablet should be enough - and no, you can't drive and function normally that day - not because of the egg retrieval, but because of the valium! Good luck!

PP, thank you for your response. I talked to the nurse and they will do an IV, so I will be half-sedated. So I should be fine.

It's generally not painful. I've had several of these, and the pain ranged from feeling nothing at all, to feeling a pinch (sort of like a "shot"), depending on how hard it was to reach the ovary. I remember feeling vaguely aware during the procedure, but not too uncomfortable. After the first one, I reduced my valium dose to taking half of a pill because it made me so loopy that I could barely walk straight.

PP, you had several retreivals? Have you got eventually pregnant through the natural cycle IVF? I don't want to get my hopes up, but reading somebody's success story would be inspiring.

11:01 here. Sorry to disappoint, but no luck so far. I've had one chemical pregnancy, one retrieval where they didn't get the egg, and we just did my 3rd retrieval. I'm waiting for embryo transfer later this week.

The nice thing about NIVF is that you can cycle every month because you aren't pumping your body with drugs. There is no down-time required between cycles. As long as you are emotionally okay with doing that... It does wear on the emotions as much as a stimulated IVF!

Good luck with your cycle!

PP: can I ask how old you are? And, does your insurance cover multiple NCIVFS? I'm meeting with Dr Gordon next week for a consult about NCIVF. THank you!

08:41 PP - wishing you good luck wit this cycle too! My retrieval was today and it wasn't bad at all. Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that everything goes well from this point. I had to take a day off today to recover (per doctor's orders) and the nurse told me to take a day off on the day of transfer. I didn't actually know there would be so many days off involved, so yes, although there are not that many meds, natural cycle IVF is still time-consuming and takes an emotional toll on you. But, of course, if you do indeed get pregnant, the end result is so worth it.

08:41 here. I'm 39. We don't have any insurance coverage for IVF (or NIVF... but I think that even people with ins. coverage for IVF may not have it for NIVF because it's not as "proven".) Dominion gives partial refunds for cycles where it is canceled b/c of LH surge (you pay $1400 or $1500 for the cycle, which is meant to cover the monitoring). If they don't get the egg or the egg doesn't fertilize, it's $3000 charge ($1400 refund).

18:28 (OP?) - Good luck to you! You've already jumped over a lot of hurdles to have gone to retrieval AND had them get the egg. I hope this cycle works for you!!

Good luck 18:41 & OP!! Hope that you both have a nice blast to transfer.

If you don't mind, please update with transfer details for those of us who are cheering from the sidelines!!

OP here. Will post an update tomorrow when I know if my egg got fertilized.

We are actually paying through my insurance at a regular IVF rate for the natural one since the insurance company don't have codes yet for the natural cycle IVF. I am lucky to have $25,000 cap for fertility treatments.

An update: my egg got fertilized and I am set for a transfer early next week. It will be the toughest two weeks of wait after that.

Congratulations, OP! Great news!

Thank you for all your kind wishes. Now I am thinking whether I should take a day off on the day of the transfer. My husband wants me to stay in bed after the transfer. I am not sure whether sitting at my desk as apposed to lying down would do any harm after the transfer. My boss is out of town, so I won't be dealing with any stress.
