Why is horse racing legal?

It’s no better than bullfighting in its brutality. They torture the horses. Six had to be euthanized from injuries this week at Churchill Downs /Kentucky Derby and another one died. In 2019 FORTY horses died at one track. It’s barbaric. Horses are such noble animals, and these trainers push them past their physical limits for money then shoot them when they break.

I'm surprised the Derby, et all, haven't been cancelled.

Hasn't everyone read/watched Black Beauty?

It is absolutely inhumane, but of course, the answer is money, as always. I refuse to watch any kind of sport that harms animals.

Tbh racing wouldn’t be at the top of my list for HORSE abuse, to say nothing of animal abuse in general.

Are you kidding? How would you feel if they euthanized dogs for dog races?

Treating a broken leg on a dog is doable, and, if unsuccessful, the limb can be amputated. Tripod dogs and cats are mobile and functional. Horses can only be treated for leg injuries im certain circumstances, and it's very expensive with no guarantee of success. Euthanasia is usually the best course for the horse.

Yes but its the conditions in which they push the horse that cause the injuries. It's not a humane sport.

There's been horse deaths at Arlington Natl Cemetary too...

"The horses that lead the caissons holding caskets of fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery are taking a 45-day break over concerns for their health.

The Army in a statement said the suspension of the horses in the caisson platoon is meant to “prioritize the health of the herd.” The pause comes after four horses of the unit died in the past two years. The horses’ living conditions have undergone recent scrutiny."

I guess I would like a little more info on what is going. Why are these horses dying? I am concerned about it.

Interesting that horses at Arlington Natl Cemetery are taking a break too.

Of the horses who died during Derby week, four had leg injuries, one died in a freak accident, and two (from the same trainer) collapsed for reasons as-yet-unknown.

Adding, after Right Belles broke down, Kentucky made changes and the number of horse deaths dropped (the situation at Santa Anita was very different). This is highly unusual and tragic. The investigations into what happened and how to prevent it in the future have already started.

Is that a high amount of leg injuries ? Just wondering.

The greyhound racing industry used to euthanize thousands of dogs every year. Then people started rescue groups for retired racers. Lots of greyhounds in the racing industry suffer broken legs every year, and some die.

It should be illegal. I wish we could have a fascinator fashion show, without the horse torture. I would never watch the Derby or support it. Why aren't rich people speaking out about this?
