At what income does one pay thousands of dollars for concert tickets?

I want to take my elementary daughter to the Taylor swift concert. The absolute cheapest tickets are $1500-1800. These would be around $2k each after fees. These are for very bad tickets. Better tickets are more like $3-5000 PER ticket.

I’m just wondering who pays this much for these tickets. I’m guessing a lot of moms are taking their children? We can afford it but it seems excessive.

Why is this thread necessary?

Some people who already carry credit card debt are going.

Some people who don't even notice $5K for an evening are going.

WOW. I had no idea. As a classical music lover, I gripe about the cost of those tickets... which have nothing to do with the prices you're mentioning. I wonder how ordinary TS fans get to her concerts. Is that par for the course for pop music?

In some families it’s a combined birthday & Christmas present. By that I mean, it’s the child’s only present for that year.

Just say no, unless you are rich enough to use money for toilet paper. I know she wants to go, but there are some levels that are just obscene.

Lots of folks in their early 20s who may have lots of disposable income but don’t have the expenses of kids/a house/etc

I think it’s mostly NOT parents taking kids. It’s mostly childless women who are treating themselves. And why shouldn’t they.

Why are you concerned what other people are doing? If you want to go then go.

I have a colleague who went to see her show. Flew somewhere. 30ish, single, no kids. Doesn’t make a lot of money, but can splurge on this instead of childcare, etc.

As always, HHI is irrelevant. What matters is whether you’re on track for the goals you’ve set, whether everything is in good order as far as debt and emergency savings and whether this fits into your budget for entertainment, travel, whatever. Everyone has different priorities and there a lot of ways to live in a fiscally responsible way.

Agree with this. It all depends how much it's worth to you.

Fwiw we have HHI of $800k and I did grab resale tickets at these ridiculous prices, but it was painful to do so. We can afford it but it's ridiculous. I paid $5k for two tickets after all of the fees. We will enjoy it and treat it as a once in a lifetime experience for us.

There are Facebook and Reddit groups of Swifties trying to sell to one another with less markup. I also saw someone post that day of the show there were good deals on StubHub.

Good luck. The market is showing us what this is worth to people. I agree it's crazy.

They were posted at these prices 24 hours after ticket sales. They were never lower.
