Dog will only eat ice cream

Anonymous
My 14 year old dog has become very picky and will only eat ice cream. Yes we have a vet appointment but not until next week and I have to keep him going on something. All of his teeth were removed last year so it’s not a dental issue. He’s turning down chicken and soft cooked vegetables which he would normally like. They only thing I can get him to eat is vanilla soft serve which is obviously terrible for him. Anyone have any advice?

Make banana ice cream- a frozen banana put through food processor. You can add peanut butter.

Give him what he likes, OP. Plain low fat vanilla ice cream is not the end of the world. There are also some commercial dog “ice creams” that you could try. Ben and Jerry’s makes 2 flavors, Dogsters also has 2 flavors as does the Bear and the Rat. I find them in the novelties section of the freezer case in Wegmans. I think Harris Teeter also carries some.

He’s 14 and has no teeth. Let him eat soft serve until he dies.

Seriously. Or make an icecream out of cooked meat. See if he likes that.

Purée food.

Soak kibble in water or bone broth.

How about puppy milk?

OP, I used this for my senior dog while she was recovering from surgery. The ingredients don’t seem much better than vanilla ice cream though:

This is a great idea. No reason you can’t put other things like chicken livers etc in ice cream. I’m pretty sure I saw an episode of top chef with chicken liver ice cream or foie gras ice cream.

B&J is a terrible suggestion for a dog without teeth.

He’s done eating, he’s telling you he’s ready… he’s only eating ice cream because it’s irresistible. Prepare yourself and do the right thing by him.

He's 14. Feed him what he'll eat. I agree with the PP that he's telling you that your time with him is coming to a close.

My 16 year old dog at the end of his life would only eat oreos. Prepare to let him go.

It's a sign, OP.

Yes. The other PPs may be right. My dog had health issues but was fine until he started not enjoying his food. I was frantically trying to find things he would eat (meat baby food mixed in with some of his soft food) that I couldn't see that he had taken a turn for the worse.
