Question about sports sleep away camp

Anonymous
My kid is going to a sports team sleep away camp for the first time this summer. This is a weird question so I apologize. Do they do bag searches or anything? My kid has to bring a medication that we want to keep confidential and do not want the teammates to know about - is there any chance the camp does searches and will confiscate a medication that will then get reported back to the team?

Depends on age and camp set up. My kid had a private college dorm room and it wouldn’t have been an issue. But I think it’s a big risk. What are the chances that the kid can “sneak” taking it?

Ok I get it. Sounds like we shouldn’t send the medicine.

It’s just a shame that the camp will be off the table because the kid can’t take the medication for fear of others going through their bag.

My sons (13 and 11 at the time) did a sleepaway sports camp last summer, and bags were not gone through. They slept in shared dorm rooms (2 per room, with same aged kids). I’d think most camps have a nurse that would handle meds- and med office would not be allowed to disclose to others, surely? If asked by others why he is going to the nurse, DS could just say he is on antibiotics or something, no?

I’m assuming you have to submit a physician’s form and list all medications, prescription and otherwise, to send your child to camp. The camp officials must know ALL the medications in case there is a medical emergency. I hope you aren’t considering concealing that information from the camp admin.

But the other kids don’t need to know what the medications are. I’m guessing this is a psychiatric or hormone/hormone suppressive medication that is causing your heightened worry. Speak with the RN/MD at the camp and I’m sure they will have a solution that protects the privacy of your child.

You have to give medication to the on-site nurse. There would be no need for teammates to know though. I would not hide it.

Just turn the medicine in to the nurse and have your kid go get the medicine. How hard is that?

What’s the medicine?

Now I want to know what this med is.

Lexapro. Happy?

You have to tell the camp about the medicine. Most require it and will dispense the medicine. Your kid doesn't have to tell anyone what its for or he can say something like its for allergies.

NP.

Why is this a big deal? I'm genuinely confused.

Give it to the nurse and your kid goes once a day and takes it.

Also, teens today really don't think this stuff is unusual and they don't even blink twice about it. Most are open if they are taking it and no one cares. You're treating it like it's shameful.

No kid at any camp is allowed to self-administer random medicines from their bag, or to have medications that could be accessed by other children. You declare the medicines (have a confidential conversation with the nurse if necessary) and they're kept in the infirmary/with a counselor/under other adult supervision. Your kid reports to the office/is given their dose as scheduled.

You're doing a real number on your kid if you're going along with the - we have to hide your mental health medication in your bag and don't ever tell anyone - line of thinking.

Do better for your kid.

OMG you people. I haven't talked to the kid at all about it. But I do know the kid isn't going to want the medication "discovered" in a backpack and made public to teammates/coaches. I think it's ok to want to keep your health information - whether it's mental health or physical health - private. The entire team doesn't need to know about everyone's private health issues.

Just wanted to know what the protocols were at a sleep away camp. We haven't gotten any medication forms yet, but it sounds like they'll require the medication be given to the camp nurse rather than kept in their bag.
