AAP Appeal with WISC - Grade 2

Anonymous
Hi,

COGAT/NNAT : 139/121
Good report cards
The teacher's rating had 3 out of 4 Frequently observed. She is supportive that the kid is bright and showing promise.
WISC score: 122 (93rd percentile)

Recent most ready are all in 93 + percentile for math and reading.
Worth going for an appeal?

She does mention often that she is bored at regular class.

I would not. I would have the child retake the COGAT and try again. The test scores are low.

Appeal, but don’t include the WISC.

Appeal with just a letter and some new work samples. Explain clearly why her needs are not being met in gen ed and why she would thrive in AAP. Do not use a WISC that is much lower than the CogAT.

As others have said, would not use the WISC since it’s lower than cogat. what was the 4th rating on GBRS? Are you at a high SES school?

A 139 CoGat isn’t low, it’s 99%.z

Agree that 139 is a great score, but I suspect the PP was referring to the 122 wisc and 3 FO (not sure what the other one was but I assume 1 OO bc OP did not mention and CO. 3 FO, 1 OO I’d not great GBRS. that said, I’d appeal if I were OP.

Apologies for all the typos.

PP: I meant the WISC was low. The GBRS don’t help. OP can always appeal, but I think she will have a better chance next year with a better package. She is not adding any new data points to the application, since she should NOT add the WISC, the chances for a successful appeal are low.

Agree with this assessment

I would appeal with a letter. I would not include the wisc. It’s unlikely your child will get in, but it really doesn’t hurt to have another set of eyes on it. With that cogat score, you may have a reviewer who will admit your child.

I think a lot of kids in AAP would have similar Wisc scores and your child would probably do great in AAP.

To OP. First and foremost, you have a smart child. Don't let the getting into AAP LEVEL 4 affect how your view your child. The NNAT/COGAT scores already show that along with the report card.

First, if you think your child is getting bored with the current curriculum and NOT being challenged enough at school, then YES, Appeal.

If the i-Ready scores were good, then in all honesty, your DC, didn't get in because of the GBRS. At a minimum, they needed one showing consistently observed. Having all of them (not sure if your 4th one was) frequently observed will in the eyes of the comittee mean your child is smart but doesn't required Level 4 based off the initial screening.

You should appeal but DON'T include the WISC. Anything less than 99th percentile for an appeal will be a negative against you.

Appeal with a cover explaining why your child needs the Level 4. Use ALL the 5 pages for the work samples. Don't skimp out / get lazy. The work samples MUST exhibit your DC's talent and ways of thinking that is above his/her age group and also outside of the box thinking.
