2023 - Going rate for nanny share

Anonymous
Hi there, we are researching childcare for my second baby...seems like the nanny rate has jumped over the last couple years.

What do you pay (hourly or weekly) for your nanny?
How many kids?
How many hours?
Do you withhold taxes?

Thanks!

Im not sure where you are located but we are in Moco, MD.

We pay $1300 weekly total for two kids. Each family pays $650 a week and that includes the tax. We do withhold taxes. The nanny gets about $950ish per week clear.

She works 42-45 hours a week

Nanny shares in Maryland are illegal and the state is staring to fine and shut them down because essentially they are illegal, unlicensed daycare. Don’t shoot me I’m just the messenger.

We pay $27/hour (divided between two families). It's two kids for approximately 45 hours a week, though it occasionally varies. We do not withhold taxes at our nanny's request, though would prefer it. I realize this is unwise, but we had a terrible experience before finding this nanny, who was recommended by a personal friend.

When looking, my sense was the going rate was around $26-30/hour for a nanny with experience, slightly less for a nanny with minimal experience and slightly more for a career nanny with extensive experience. I got the sense that the info on DCUM regarding rate was skewed with many nannies posting.
I also think a lot of nannies are uninterested in shares because they are a lot of work (I can't imagine keeping up with two toddlers all day!), but as a parent, I am really happy with our nanny share!

My mother has done nanny shares in D.C. and these rates are spot on for two kids. She has taxes withheld and her hours are usually 45 hours a week. I make sure her contract is comprehensive and includes vacation and sick days, and that she's paid even when the parents are away on vacation. In DC, you are also required to have workers comp insurance so make sure you factor in the cost of that.

We pay a 2 kid rate of $25 (split between 2 families) in DC, but we started in summer of 2021 and I think it's gone up to being more like $30 for 2 kids or $25 for one now.

You are crazy for not withholding taxes. But I’m guessing you get that.

Either Jeff does not not know or it might not matter for DCUM purposes. The state isn’t going to go after him.

why would any nanny accept $27 for a share if she can get 25-30 for one child any day she wants? I do not believe any nanny would accept a share job for less than $35. If you pay like you said $27, it is less than a daycare. Cannot possibly exist.

Our old nanny (from a previous share) works a share currently for $27/hour. She is undocumented, but in the process of getting her papers (got married in last fall).

Shares are a lot of coordination on the part of the parents but an experienced nanny has no problem with 1 vs 2. In fact, it seems like the jobs our nanny worked with one family were a lot more difficult in dealing with the parent’s demands. Changing hours constantly, etc. in a share all parties have to agree to terms upfront, better for all.

Our nanny is currently just for us and getting $26 per hour. We’ll be moving to a share in August when our older child goes to PK and plan to pay $28 divided between the two families.
