Well-written books on trauma after being the victim of a crime

Anonymous
My family and I were recently subject to a criminal act and I’m seeking the help of a therapist, and also wanted book recommendations. I feel weird writing more and hope that is enough to elicit some good recommendations. Thanks.

I don't know if books about other people's trauma is necessarily going to give you any peace. The only one I've read is by Jaycee Dugard and the only reason I read it was because she was literally silenced for 18 years of her life in that crappy backyard set up with all the abuse.

Sorry I was unclear- I meant books to help in the aftermath, books to aid in getting through PTSD as a crime victim, not narratives about other crimes.

I’m very sorry OP. I understand that The Body Keeps Score is helpful to many.

The body keeps the score is excellent.

OP, I have been victim to a couple traumas and one that was a street crime. It's important to keep telling the story -- out loud, right it down, etc. In as much detail as you can. It will feel repetitive but it is important for your brain to be able to understand it as part of your life story and to put it into words (during a trauma your brain goes to a nonverbal place). I received that advice after the street crime and I stopped feeling a trauma response after a few months.

Good luck!

Of course, apologies for misconstruing your ask. I have heard that The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van Der Kolk is worth reading. Good luck OP.

I thought Chanel Miller did a good job of writing about her experience and how she got through it. If it’s not too triggering, it might be helpful.
