MCAP… Teacher told my DC’s class

Anonymous
That MCAP is the second most important test they will take in their entire lives. If they don’t do well it would be an embarrassment for the school!!! That they should try to get everything correct..!!!!My DC 3rd grader was so nervous about starting mcap today.. what the heck?? Why would the teacher make our kids so anxious about a test???

Did the teacher say that this morning? If so, how do you already know that?

You have a 3rd grader taking MCAP today? That seems very early.

NP. My DC has her first MCAP today.

some schools do the test as soon as the test window opens.

and mcap is important for the school/that teacher, not for the individual student.

No. She said that on Friday. My DC kept saying he feels nervous about mcap and what if he does bad. I kept telling him he will do fine and that it doesn’t matter. Then he told me what the teacher told the class on Friday. Thats how i know.

My 3rd snd 5th grader are both starting mcaps today.

It’s too bad the teacher talked like that. Make sure your 3rd grader understands that the teacher was nervous about what the test would reveal about her own performance and she took it out on her class. Adults get caught up in worrying about things too, and unfortunately, she really overstated the importance of this test in her students’ lives because of the importance it carries for her.

I'm a teacher and I'm not stressed at all about how the scores will reflect on me. I don't really know any other teachers concerned with this either as it isn't really a reflection of our teaching skills at all. I just told my fifth graders not to worry about it and try their best.

This. Also tell your 3rd grader that when the teacher says that the test is important and they need to take it seriously, this doesn't mean you need to work your self up into a tizzy. It just means getting a good night's sleep the night before, eating breakfast, and trying your best. You'd be surprised how many kids don't do these three things.

As a teacher, we are NOT evaluated on the test scores at all. They mean nothing for us. They mean everything for the schools but again, not for us. We truly do not care. We like it because after that, teaching is pretty much pointless.

For 3rd grade it is important.

That is crazy but I would just tell my kid to do the best they can and not to worry about it.

Sometimes announcements like that are really meant for the kids who are just going to rush carelessly through the test so they can read or play games or draw or whatever during the rest of the testing time. Unfortunately, it’s the really conscientious kids who feel the weight of the announcement the most, even though it wasn’t really for them. It’s like when the kid who is always well behaved feels terrible after the teacher scolds the entire class for general bad behavior.

Maybe there is a healthy balance somewhere between what the teacher said and what you said...
