Why be a jerk?

In so many posts about grading late work, people jump on posters saying "your kid shouldn't be turning work in late."

Well, there are a gazillion reasons why make-up work might be coming in late, even toward the end of the marking period. I know kids who were hospitalized for a couple of weeks and they turn in work late, kids who get COVID and are out for 5-10 days, kids who are immunocompromised, kids who have family issues, kids struggling with mental health and attendance.

There are a lot of legitimate reasons a kid would have work being turned in late. Maybe your perfectly healthy kid has perfect attendance and never misses a day of school or an assignment but that isn't the case for everyone and people whose kids struggle more don't deserve to be jumped on.

People on these boards are mean to others for their own entertainment. It's not a great look for them.

At least when I post something like that, it’s not aimed at cases where there are legit reasons for lateness. With these crazy striver parents I’m always pretty convinced their snowflake missed an assignment or just didn’t do it and now they’re scrambling at the end of the semester. THAT’S annoying and entitled.

Yeah you're just being a jerk to people online for your own entertainment. The biggest tell is the use of the word "snowflake". Not a good look for you.

Well the other side of that coin is people complaining about how slack MCPS policies are about grading and retakes etc.

Both things can be true: Sometimes there are legit reasons for being behind and turning in work late and other times a lot of people are BSing and trying to get away with murder.

I can't help you how you feel but I think that pp was right. you are too focused on how the message was delivered, not the message itself

I mean I've never complained that my child wasn't given enough chances to turn something in so this isn't me taking things personally.

I also think the way messages are delivered matters. You may be "right" but if you're a jerk about it, you're still a jerk.

These policies handicap students headed to college. They instill and reward bad habits. But I guess school districts don’t care what happens to students after they graduate.

Kids with mental health issues/health issues will generally have an IEP or 504 that gives them extra time/flexibility. If kids aren't terribly sick with covid/colds they can still go online and do the work. And, if there is a need, you communicate with the teachers.

if you think every kid with challenges has an iep or 504, I have a bridge in Brooklyn...

It goes both ways. You want grace for your kid, you need to be willing to extend that same grace to other kids AND your child's teacher. Everyone has those legitimate reasons things aren't happening on time, and assuming good intentions goes a long way.

While these reasons exist, they are much more rare than kids simply forgetting or futzing a round. It’s like adults paying utility bills late. The majority of the time, it’s not late because they had Covid or depression or a catastrophic tech crisis.

Agreed. And "striver." And all the assumptions in it. The assumptions and judgment are what gets me.
