| DH is being recruited for a position in New Brunswick NJ. For those of you who know NJ, what suburbs/cities should we consider? Budget is 1 million. |

How far are you willing to commute? Is there any telework or is it 5 days a week in the office? A lot of the places I would want to live in that area are 40 minutes without traffic. And there’s lots of traffic there.

This is a good suggestion because you should be able to take the train from Princeton Junction and avoid the traffic. No clue what the parking situation was. When I lived there 20 years ago parking at the station was a problem. |

| If you want excellent schools, consider towns like Bridgewater, Watchung, Montgomery Township in Somerset County and maybe South Brunswick, East Brunswick and Metuchen in Middlesex County. Somerset County is much more affluent overall than Middlesex. |

| My good friends just sold because they’re downsizing empty nesters but they LOVED Basking Ridge. He commuted to New Brunswick. |

Ridge High School is better than all of the schools listed upthread (and I attended one of the schools listed upthread). Basking Ridge is wonderful- definitely add it to your list of places to look. I would cross anywhere in Middlesex County off your list if you can afford Somerset County (and you can) |

| ^^^also meant to add that the property taxes in NJ are astronomical. Definitely make sure your house budget accounts for the annual property taxes. |

I'm in NJ, yes property taxes are astronomical. We pay $10,500 on a 2100 square foot home.
New Brunswick is not an area you want to live in, but other posters had some nice suggestions of towns to look into. You would be about 30 minutes from Princeton, which is a really nice town to live in. |

Well, I pay around $8000 for 1500 sq ft in the DC area. But my property is assessed at about $700K. It would be helpful to specify assessed value when discussing property taxes, because that's always how they're calculated. I've never heard of property taxes being based on square footage. |
