If only it could come quicker. I can say from personal experience, riding the hood of a work van like Teen Wolf is less fun than it seemed in the movies.

Oof, were you on a bike?

Yeah, intersections will be a lot “safer” with bicycles speeding through willy nilly while drivers have to take a conference with themselves to decide if turning right on red would “improve safety” or not.

What a completely silly, fantasy-driven, reality-ignoring law.

No, pedestrian, in the cross walk while the walk signal was on. It was at North Capital southbound where it turns right onto New York, which if you’ve ever been there will likely not come as a surprise. If I die in DC, it will be at that intersection.

What the hell are you talking about. Drivers don’t get to decide that. The city does, and then post signs accordingly.

Basically it just changes the default. Right now, you can turn unless the sign says you can’t. After the law is in effect, you can’t turn unless the sign says you can.

It’s a fantastic change.

I’m going to ignore this every single time. Unless I’m near a school in the morning or a busy farmer’s market. Eff that.

I've lived in 3 cities that didn't allow right turn on red (or left turn on red, depending), and it's definitely safer for pedestrians, bikes, strollers, bike messengers, etc. It slows things down for cars, but there was barely a chance to turn right (or left) on red anyway, because of all the cars/bikes/people. I'm guessing that many of the less busy intersections in dc will allow right turn on red with signage.

Will all the roads be redesigned in just 3 years? Because the traffic is going to be awful otherwise...

Why not just put no turn on red signs on busy intersections?

It will very likely be accompanied by ticket cameras. Very easy to install and enforce.

Intersections would be even MORE safe without any cars at all.

This is a classic example of why right turn on red just needs to be banned. Legally the driver has to wait for the crosswalk to clear but in practice drivers are inching into crosswalks and only looking in the direction of traffic to make sure it is clear. The reason right turn on red is dangerous is because drivers do it wrong- you can only turn once the intersection is completely clear and you can't block the crosswalk to do so. So, because so many drivers are inconsiderate morons it needs to be banned for all.
