Do your teens talk about guns? Gun violence?

Anonymous
Do you ever ask your kids whether all of these headlines have an effect on them? What about active shooter drills? Do you ask them how these make them feel? Do you ever ask them what they would do if a friend teased or mentioned they were stockpiling weapons or jokes about causing harm to others? Do you ever mention to your kids that the United States of America is THE LONE country in the world with such gun violence problems? Do you ever mention that schools in every other first world nation have open doors and windows (weather permitting), no badges, no security, no check-in/out procedures, and kids playing and laughing freely in the schoolyard? Do you ever ask them if that is where they would rather be?

My tweens and tween talk about it frequently. Sometimes in a frighteningly nonchalant way but they're very aware of gun violence and the need for gun control. My tween just yesterday was talking about her exit plan if there was a shooter in her ES. Horrific times.

Do you realize the generations of psychological harm being created by active shooter drills alone, much less the actual tragedies? Do you wonder about the psychological toll being waged on your kids?

No
No, We discuss active shooter drills if we are in an airplane, concert, mall, etc... what to do
No
Yes, we talk about responsible gun ownership and that anybody <18 with a gun is a problem, an unsecured gun is a problem, having many guns is a problem, talking about your gun is a problem.

We just took our 2 kids to the shooting range over Xmas and taught them how to shoot a gun, how to secure a gun, how to transport a gun properly, different typs of guns and how they shoot differently, etc

Yes of course

We are gun owners.

My kids absolutely know the US needs gun laws. They absolutely discuss this with us and their peers. They know the NRA is BS and crap. Republicans are heinous.

They know what an AR 15 does to a body.
How much ammo it takes for these mass murders. That no one ever needs.

Also one of mine was at Virginia Tech while the moron police arrested the wrong guy. So yeah mine are very informed and discuss.

Given the Republican Party BS how could they not discuss?

OP's subject line indicate they're interested in whether my teens talk about guns. However, the message only asks what I, as the parent, am telling my kids. That's all fine but misleading title.

No, but we also do not talk about falling in the bathtub, shark attacks, lightning strikes, or other statistically irrelevant ways teens die in 2023.

We do talk about teen suicide and fentanyl. And driving accidents / deaths. Those are real risks.

OP’s title is very misleading.

Yeah, because she’s not interested in anyone’s answer. She is just lobbying for more gun control; she dumps this all over DCUM.

So let me get this straight: “talking about your guns” is a problem but you did just that and it was OK.

“The US needs gun laws.”

“How much ammo it takes for these mass murders.” Really? Some of them bring a significant supply of ammunition. Few of them live to fire very much of it.

You mean like the hundreds of existing laws routinely observed by the vast majority of people but blithely violated by hardened criminal psychopaths and florid nutters?

“What an AR15 does to a body.” You’re a pathologist? AR15’s are (1) uniform; and (2) unique among firearms for their wounding capacity?

“Gun violence” is a political buzzword and ignores that violence of all kinds is perpetrated by people, not inanimate objects.

OP, one can sense from your post that you have an agenda. Yes? How about you just lay it out there without trying to use my kids to make your point?

No. They do their drills at school, but that's it.
