FCPS Boundary Review Updates

There’s no sizable group of McLean parents asking for boundary changes like there was back in 2019. The enrollments are now gradually coming down.

They don’t have a revised renovation queue, so it’s unclear what the criteria will be, but the 2008 queue prioritized schools that were at or above capacity and penalized schools that were under capacity. That’s why Falls Church’s renovation got pushed back so long.

McLean parent here and I disagree. The common spaces and hallways are way too crowded in addition to the state of disrepair. Waiting until another renovation queue is designed and all the years until construction would even start is too long. MHS needs relief now.

Another McLean parent and I agree with the prior poster. Technically may be enough classroom space with the modulars but everything else is horrifically overcrowded. FCPS should drop McLean HS enrollment by several hundred students until there is a renovation.

It seems like you’re pushing to have other kids moved to help your own. Would you be willing to move your kids to Langley or FCHS to relieve the McLean overcrowding?

I am not a fan of moving students who already attend a HS if it can be avoided. However, I am in favor of FCPS reducing McLean HS enrollment starting with the incoming freshman class.

So then, not YOUR kids. Other people's kids. Got it.

Still not articulating what “needs to be done” I see. Is that because nothing really needs to be done?

If the McLean islands want to be moved, then sure, move them. Put it to a vote for those islands. Otherwise, you’re just pushing for your kid to have a slightly less crowded experience by using other people’s kids as pawns, and moving kids against their will.

Agree and most “islands” don’t want to move. kids want to stay in their school and with their friends - if we really care about social emotional learning this is important.

The kids from these attendance islands are already being separated from their elementary school cohorts since they come from split feeders. Part of this exercise is to eliminate split feeders where feasible so communities and friend groups aren’t broken apart.

The school board used to say that it was important too. Then they let themselves get hijacked by Sandy Anderson’s boundary change crusade which will severely impact thousands of kids in their crosshairs.

I’m fine with the elimination of split feeders, if the island that will be moved wants it. Otherwise we’re being awfully paternalistic towards these families, which apparently the school board and the shills are fine with. Boundary change for thee but not for me.

DP. I think they are done with formal or informal community plebiscites.

In McLean’s case, I think they move the Spring Hill island to Langley and the Timber Lane island to Falls Church. Then they eliminate the split feeders at Westgate and Lemon Road by moving all of Westgate to McLean and all of Lemon Road to Marshall. Only caveat is that this divides Pimmit Hills between McLean and Marshall, but I think they conclude the elimination of the split feeders justifies it.

This reduces McLean’s enrollment for years to come. It increases Langley’s enrollment, but Langley has space and also can claw back 100 seats just by eliminating pupil placements. Falls Church will have plenty of space after its renovation. It would reduce Marshall’s enrollment and enable it to accept more pupil placements for IB again.

Note that this is a prediction and not a wish.

A lot of these ideas just make middle schools split feeders which is worse than ES split feeders for kids academics/social.

The 6-8 proposal is the main one that would seemingly create more MS split feeders. Did you have other ideas in mind as well?

Non-rush hour and perfect driving conditions.

To Cooper: 9 miles and 21 minutes

To Langley: 10 miles and 25 minutes

No doubt that trip is considerably longer during rush hour and when driving conditions are poor.

Whatever else happens with the boundary review, if there is a practical way to send those kids to a closer school, that's what FCPS should do. We are paying a lot just to allow one set of wealthy kids to attend school with other wealthy kids and no poor kids.

Just to push back against tour narrative. I live out there, and have taken to checking travel times from Forestville when the buses go by my house. The delta is 3.4 minutes longer to cooper than HMS on average and 9.8 minutes longer to Langley than HHS.

Not sure what you think it costs to employ an extra bus driver for half an hour a day, but I assure you $12 is the lowest hanging fruit that they could go after.

Get yourself a better argument, or at least admit it’s all an equity play for you.

Dude - there is a group on replying with the same argument; their goal is to get the Dems out. This was brought up before on the other forums. Certain Republicans are using the FCPS forum to foment some anger. There was even a debate to show where equity was the primary goal - it's not anywhere. The goal has been dealing with over populated schools.

Geography cannot be defeated by bussing. This is a physical limitation.

If there is a Republican plan to handle the overcrowding then let's hear it. But so far it's get the Dems out and make some deep cuts to FCPS.

Maybe stop wasting millions of dollars on political fads (e.g., million dollar+ name changes from Woodson to ... Woodson) and DEI crap and FCPS would have more money to actually, ya know, carry out their mission of educating kids. Just a thought.

You didn’t really answer PP’s question. How do we get rid of overcrowding if not boundary changes?

DP.

Well, PP said that two of the three overcrowded schools are chantilly and centreville, and the centreville expansion costing hundreds if millions seems to be on track. So not sure why they couldn’t do something similar for McLean. Problem solved.

Otherwise, move the two McLean islands and call it a day. There is no need for further moves than that.

You just don't want the poor kids at McLean. You want to turn it into another Langley. Shame on you.

DP. Did you just gloss over the part where PP suggested expanding McLean? It’s the School Board that refuses to invest in McLean, prioritizes the elimination of attendance islands, and wastes money on a new Dunn Loring ES that could have been allocated to Chantilly and McLean. Blame freaking Karl Frisch for that.

Anyway, if they do reassign the two islands they can maintain almost the same level of diversity at MHS by reassigning all of Westgate ES to McLean.

You do know you’re likely responding to a Langley poster who’s saying whatever they do with McLean needn’t require moving anyone out of Langley (“no need for further moves than that”), right?

That poster doesn’t care one way or the other how many poor kids end up at McLean. They just want to be unaffected by any boundary changes.

DP. Give it a rest. Your constant invoking of Langley as some kind of boogeyman just makes you look idiotic. You have no idea who wrote the post in question. Grow up, for once.
