Dating with no intention of marriage

Dating used to be a way to find potential long term partners. How we got to a point where dating is just for fun without any intention of longevity or marriage? At least that's how its seen in 15-35 crowd. How is it changing our society? What are the pros and cons?

I’m in my 50s and married. If divorce or death caused me to be single again, I would date but would not remarry. I’d date because I enjoy doing things with others.

I’m 42 and divorced. I date, but not for marriage, which frankly, is what DCUM advises to do anyway.

Yes, my 15 year old dates for fun, not marriage.

All dating should initially be for fun. If something develops, great. But don't put MARRIAGE pressure on a simple lunch.

From the responses you're already getting above, you can see that PPs are scoffing. I think it's your wording. What you mean, and I see this happening too, is that people are more openly dating solely to have sex, without even a pretense of starting a relationship first. People have always dated just as a way to get sex but I think now it's considered OK, even the norm among some people, to equate "dating" with "having sex by the third (or fourth etc.) date and regularly after that, or I'm gone, and will find someone else who'll have sex after minimal time together." Because that's their end game, not a relationship or eventual commitment of any kind. And I hate it, because it cheapens sex while at the same time elevating it into the No. 1 priority between two people.

It's fun and there are many advantages but more and more people are ending up lonely, depressed, infertile and without supportive partners.

Obviously regular fun and sex with new partners without any social taboos is an advantage (especially since birth control and safe abortion practices lowered unwanted pregnancies), its taking away love, support and stability that comes with relationships.

You get experience and get to know what you like or dislike in a partner but you also become insatiable and not willing to work on your relationships when you have one because novelty wears off quickly and then you cheat, fight or want out without any sensible reasons. I see many pros and cons but end result seems is a loss for a high percentage of couples.

To be fair, its also taking away responsibility, stress and heartaches that come with relationships and making lives simpler.

Um, I don't think anyone under 18 should be included in any adult dating statistics.

Well, since abortion is being curtailed and banned in many places, and those same people are coming after birth control eventually, better get back to dating for marriage, I guess. Or save up for a "travel to an abortion-friendly state" fund.
