DC delays Conn Ave bike lanes bcuz of opposition

Anonymous
DDOT had planned to wrap up designs this spring but now will take until the end of the year because of opposition per axios. Seems like good news. People seem to hate this project

False. They are also considering extending and widening the bike lanes. One way or another Connecticut Ave is going on a diet. There’s only so much a very loud group of NIMBYs can accomplish. And if this is anything like the “petitions” I am aware of in other NIMBY contexts, they probably falsified signatures or lied about the project to get signers.

Connecticut Avenue is already on a diet now that parking is allowed all day, no rush hour restrictions. That should slow things down the same as bike lanes would.

It’s clear by now that the federal workforce will not return en masse in person. The DC CFO recently confirmed that the city is facing a massive revenue shortfall in the coming years. So when the mayor receives a petition signed by hundreds of small businesses on a major revenue corridor she thankfully pumped the brakes. Kudos to all the businesses who had the courage to sign their names.

Because the bike lobby would NEVER do that.... /s

Finally. Having bike lanes on a major artery is insanity.

The tens of bicyclists who were going to use these lanes are going to be very unhappy

There's literally like 8 bikers in DC and they are loud and obnoxious as hell and also don't even understand basic traffic laws. They're a pedestrian when it's a convenient for them and they're a car when it's convenient for them. All bow down to the superior bikers!

I know people barely use all our bike lanes but if they build these, you will see upwards of 30 people using them every week

Good, DC infrastructure should not be all about rich, white progressives.

Apparently one of the construction workers building the Cleveland Park service lane discovered a perfectly good subway system directly under Connecticut Avenue, thus negating the need for bike lanes.

What's even better is most white folks pay to use the Metro but most POC don't have to worry about it. This is very progressive indeed, and a sign that perhaps not all infrastructure is about rich, white progressives.

You anti-bike people are insane. Why even live in or commute to the city? Go make your life out in the exurbs and leave us alone.

Are you aware that less than 4% of the city population bike commutes? You exist in a very narrow minority.
