What are the best things about your bathroom renovation?

Anonymous
We're likely going to have to remodel our bathroom, and are feeling pretty bummed about having to pay that much money to redo a small (5'x8') bathroom that is boring but fine, and ending up with something that feels really similar. Cheer me up with ideas for fun bathroom upgrades (either function or style-wise) that you've enjoyed?

So far I've mustered a little enthusiasm for the idea of a deeper tub to soak in (although even then I can't go that deep because the kids still need to bathe in it...)

Skip the tub and do a large walk in shower with multiple jets

Heated floors (heavenly all winter long)

Another vote for heated floors plus a shower big enough for a teak stool.

We have the deep tub and I love it, as do my daughters. Heated floors are awesome. We also have a foot pedal (more of a foot bar) for the sink. The harder you push the harder the water pressure. We also have a towel warmer mounted in reach of the tub and shower.

+1 for the heated tile floors. It's been 17 years since our home renovation and it is still THE best thing ever. If we ever move, I'm going to but them in the new place for sure!

I love my patterned encaustic floor tile, it makes me happy every time I look at it, more than a year in. I also picked fun mosaic for the shower floor and niches. These costs are already in your budget, so it's not even an upgrade.
Shaving ledge in shower.
I regret not installing a pullout faucet in the (pre-existing) tub, but that would have been additional cost and time.

Same size bathroom, same feeling of shame in paying so much for so little space.

Things I like: New shower, valve, handset. New shower head is nice, handset good for the kid, thermostatic valve much nicer to use than the old one.

Toto bidet toilet (Aquia)

Sorry this is going to be long, but I have so much to say. I have done three bathroom renovations, all in teeny bathrooms in which we didn't expand or move around fixtures, and every one of them elicits oohs and ahhs and they make me so happy every day!

The things that make me happiest:

Mirrors. Emily Henderson said a mirror is like the jewelry of the bathroom and she's right on this one. I also did recessed medicine cabinets in the master bathroom and boy do those make me happy.

Little extras like unique lighting, fun shower curtains, pretty toilet paper holders and towel hooks, hardware, and trash cans. I love get these things from Anthropologie.

This is a weird one, but a flat transition between the bathroom floor and the adjacent floor. We just have a piece of schluter in there and it is just a really clean, pretty transition. And no tripping over a threshold.

I thought hard about how we could do a smart use of space as far as the functionality of the bathroom, what I did is just as good as changing the layout or moving plumbing would have been. We got a custom vanity that is perfect for the space and has two sinks instead of one. It's only 48 inches and narrower than a regular vanity, but it is actually plenty of space for a double sink.

Wall-mount faucets: makes it easier to clean and makes the bathroom look unique.

The vibes: in the powder room I wanted to go dramatic yet quaint, and in the kids' bathroom I wanted to go very calm (one of my kids has anxiety). I think I did a pretty good job and the bathrooms just make you feel good, as weird as that sounds for a bathroom.

Lastly, a bidet.

Here is an example of the kind of thing I got from anthropology that was an easy way to make the bathroom more fun:

I agree re: a recessed medicine cabinet. Our master bath is very tiny and there's no way we could fit two sinks in there, much less a bidet.

I highly recommend in-wall storage, which can be built in between the studs. Ours is only ~4" deep but as tall as a refrigerator and it holds SO much stuff. It looks roughly like this:

Good sized shower with flat pebble floor and diverter hose with separate head to really clean all over.

I get it OP, paid a lot of money for the renovation of our teeny tiny bathroom, but it has been life-changing. Since the bathroom is so small, we went ahead and splurged on the finishes, marble tile, marble vanity (it's 24inches, the only size that fits!), Toto toilet, soaking tub, heated floors, and my favorite feature is the floor to ceiling shelves for storage

+1 to my massive (tall) recessed medicine cabinet. It holds so much and is still a very nice looking mirror.

Really wish we would have gone for the recessed medicine cabinet/wall storage. Great use of space in a small space!

Happy we did a nice bidet and wall mounted towel warmer. Also glad we did a shower door and not a curtain.

In our last house we put in a huge 3-door medicine cabinet that stretched the width of the 4-foot vanity. We didn't recess it,, but you could. Kohler makes it. They also make a vanity with storage and outlets for hot tools like your blower and curling iron, but I didn't buy that.

Between-studs cabinet with outlet for electric toothbrushes.

Walk-in shower with tile bench (we are not tub people).

Towel bars long enough to let bath sheets dry.

Outlet for a bidet seat for the toilet.

Yes, vanity with well-organized storage is life-changing. I was able to move so much crap to drawers. We got a large vanity, with outlets and storage for hot implements, from Costco.
If you are getting an bidet (you should!), make sure there are power outlets to support it.
