Where does “Taco Tuesday” come from?

Why do so many Mexican restaurants run specials on Tuesday? I thought aggressive specials are usually to get rid of aging food. But our favorite always busy taqueria is closed Sun and Mon, so presumably, Tuesday is when they get all fresh ingredients, right? Or maybe by Tuesday the food is a couple days old from the weekend?

Because people like to pair words that are similar so Taco Tuesday and Meatless Mondays are easy menu-suggestions to remember.

Restaurants just capitalize on marketing. I mean, Mexican restaurants have taco stuff every day, so if they can get more people in on Tuesdays (which are one of the slowest days, I'm betting) then why wouldn't they?

Would a busy taqueria that is closed Sunday and Monday still have food left over from Fri/Sat they need to discount on Tuesday? I just don't see why a busy place would bother participating and willingly lower their margins -- unless they had to get rid of old food? And if it's not old food from Fri/Sat, that means it was just-delivered freshest food they're willingly discounting.

The Origin of Taco Tuesday
According to The Strange History of Taco Tuesday, the promotional phrase was started in 1982 by a chain called Taco John's based out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. In fact, Taco John's placed a registered trademark on the phrase in 1989 to attach it to their brand.

I always assumed it was just a catchy name. Many years ago when I worked at Georgetown University the cafeteria had Taco Tuesday served in a fried tortilla bowl.

My home town taco joint ran specials on Taco Tuesday going back to the early 80s. A clever marketing slogan that caught on long ago.

Haha. I just posted about my local taco joint. It was Taco Johns. So funny.

But my town is in Nebraska. They took over the state from Wyoming.
