We are looking for a good writing tutor to work with our DC that will be joining RMIB this fall. We understand there is a ton of writing. We have been unimpressed with the writing assignments that our DC was getting in middle school and the grades felt very inflated. If you have some good recommendations, please share.
Thanks |
| Definitely would love some reccos too for my DS. MCPS English assignments aren't what they used to be. Kids read excerpts of books rather than whole books and punctuation and grammar are not a concern, since they let kids rely heavily on Grammarly and don't ding them for grammatical errors, even at the AP level... |
| We use Tutor ME - free via MCPS. |
| No recommendation but freshman year English has been wonderful at RMIB. They’ve read a lot of long books already and are working on a 3-5 page essay right now. They have interesting discussion and do a lot of peer editing. |
RMS9 is probably the toughest class for RMIB because it is the intro class to a ton of writing, and the grading is harder. Most kids, even from Eastern MS magnet, aren't used to that level of expectation in the writing. DC, now a senior at RMIB, said it was the toughest class, and that most kids got a C in the first writing assignment. But, don't despair. They eventually meet the higher expectation, and many end up with an A in the class at the end. DC said if they look at their writing from the beginning of RMS 9 to now, they can see a huge improvement. As for a tutor.. maybe DC will be interested over the summer, if you're interested. |
Aren't Tutor Me and FEV Tutor paid for by CARES Act funds? I wouldn't bank on these programs continuing too far into next school year. |
I’m the PP above. There’s a good amount of writing but I wouldn’t say a ton. DC struggled a little first semester but they and most kids seem used to it now. It’s nice because it’s the first time DC has gotten real feedback about analysis and not just grammar (which they barely got anyway in middle school). A writing tutor couldn’t hurt if they’re really worried, but it might also be useful to practice some long form reading of more mature literature. |

Gotta love the parents that think their kids are smart enough for magnets, but the kids need tutors to survive.

This is a moronic statement. Being a gifted or smart kid doesn't mean ZERO support. And anyone who is good at anything must practice and train, and that usually involves people other than themselves. Is Lebron James not a legitimately talented professional basketball player because he has a coach and athletic trainers who support him in honing and nurturing his God-given talent? So why is a bright, gifted student not bright if they use a tutor? Get a grip. |
Certain people are convinced that innate ability should only apply to academics, but for sports, it's fine to hire private couches and whatnot. FWIW, My kid had no tutors. RMIB senior, straight As all throughout. However, it is a tough program, and throw in all the activities (and for many, the commute), it's a tough program for many. It's fine to get a little help. |

We've been very happy with DS' writing tutor. If you send me an email I'd be happy to pass along his information.

Of course but the PP clearly has a bad case of sour grapes. |
Yes, but there is a discussion on keeping them but if not we're going to use them as much as possible while it is available. |
np, is that your birth year? Seems odd to put that in your email with your full name. |
| Are you on the RMIB parent listserve yet? If so, you may want to post there and see if any of the graduating seniors would like the job to pick up some extra cash before college. I bet you’d get some takers. |
