March 2021- March 2023- S&P 500= 0% total return! Today we touched 4050 on the S&P (SPX) why is this range significant? That is the top of the JPM collar. The collar is massive options trade that moves the markets. Interest rates will keep this range in place for at least another year. And it probably won't be able to keep the market out of crash territory in the next quarter.

| when they say buy and hold, "hold" >> 2 years |
+1 "buy and hold is dead because the market doesn't always go up short-term" is not the savvy investment take you think it is, OP. |
It will take another 4 years just to pass the 4800 reached in December of 2022. So about 6 years of single low single digits by that time by low I mean 2%. this is not your parents buy and hold era |
| Tell me some good news. I plan to retire in 8-10 years. |
|
If you don't pick the right stocks, you bought them high without doing your research, and you think "hold" is a few years... I can't help you. You made all the rookie mistakes. Be smarter. |
| in 2011, the 60/40 portfolio was given last rights. Fools trying to time the market are alive and not well. |
| I'm a novice but my understanding was that buy and hold was a strategy for things like index funds over a lifetime (5+ years type things). |
| And it's still overvalued lol |
| OP here. Can't wait for 4,5- 10 years of 0-4% average for people that used to and still have their gauge set on 10% annual return. Review what Jack Bogle was saying back in 2017 "investors should dramatically reduce their expectations for market returns" We would be 3-4 years down this road already if it weren't for the pandemic stimulus machine. I am not a buy and hold investor its a dying practice that will yield low single digit returns on average. You can profit on market runs and declines if your using other tools like options. If you are ok with buy and hold be prepared its not going to add up to what is was in the past |
| Any 15 years of returns (including during the great depression), the market goes up. This is what buy and hold means, 15 years, not 2, not 5, not 10 |
| Hey OP you forgot to tell us about crypto |
|
Maybe I’m looking at the wrong numbers but I just pulled Jan 21 to Jan 23 and it looks like it’s up over 7%. Did OP cherry pick a high month and a low month to get 0% return?
Anyway, if you’re looking short term you’re probably better off in bonds right now. And anyone who expected 10% average returns over the long term was unrealistic. 5-7 is realistic. |
| I have a whole bunch of stocks that I bought years ago and are up over 400 percent since then as of today's close. Seems like buying and holding is working OK for me? |
| Cool story bro |
