If in a dream world, your kid got into both, which would you choose? Kid is studious, efficient, manages stress (so far), but not a grinder. Likes sports, hanging out with friends, part of a band.

CMU
Cornell is at a level below CMU for CS. |
|
CMU all the way.
The kids work, but there is a good blend and plenty for everyone to fit in with. |
+1 for CS it is practically unparalleled and Pittsburgh is so much more fun than Ithaca. Congrats! |
| DD is at Cornell. She was wl at CMU and would have dropped Cornell for it (though is very happy at Cornell) |
|
Cornell for sure. It is a better overall school (majors change) and isn't the grind CMU is. I'd especially say Cornell given the interests listed.
CS grads at Cornell do great too and it has a better overall reputation even in big tech, where I work, and among the financial institutions that also heavily recruit CS grads for quant and eng roles. |
| Cornell. Very few people would pick CMU over Cornell. The program matters in some cases but Cornell also has good CS and a better environment. |
| Cornell. CMU is too hard although of course it’s one of the best and ranked higher than Cornell which is also great. |
| Obviously Cornell for undergrad. It’s stronger overall, it has a much better rounded undergrad program, and it also has a world-class CS department. CMU will still be there for grad school. |
|
Cornell is excellent school and just barely falls outside of the T15 ranking for US News.
But CMU is the east choice here - different level for CS |
| Personally, I’d go Cornell but both are great schools so it’s more about feel. What does your kid prefer? |
|
Tough choice. I would consider picking Cornell because kids often change their major.
Cornell is top notch in so many different fields. CMU is a great school but only known for a few things |
| I’d really be dreaming and I’d have to wake up |
| Whichever the student liked better on tours/an admitted student weekend. I got into both and didn't want to got to CMU because I disliked Pittsburg and didn't feel like the school was a good fit for me during my tour. I almost went to Cornell since I like the vibe of the campus and the area, but ended up at MIT because I absolutely loved campus preview weekend and felt like all the incoming freshmen I met were people I could easily be friends with. I think I would have been successful and happy at any of the schools I got into. |

I have one at Cornell and he had a few friends who had to make a decision between SCS and Cornell COE CS.
He says the hardcore CS will go to CMU SCS. Competitive programming types who live and breathe CS. The others, who are also great at CS but have broader interests go to Cornell. While CMU is a top 4 CS school, Cornell CS is still a top 5 program (in reality, there are probably 4 schools that have a claim at #5) but the difference is Cornell is top 10 in many disparate , other fields than CMU. That interaction with those others is part of what defines Cornell. Obviously CMU is in a nicer city though. |
