Bunion and hammer toe surgery

Any recs in virginia? How long were you off your feet?

No recs in Va but I had bunion removals for both of my feet. Two months wearing a boot after each surgery.

I see this guy: https://www.cfaortho.com/our-doctors/96/Steven__K._Neufeld,_M.D.

I’m scheduled for surgery later this year.

Further to your question. Dr. Neufeld said I would be in a boot 6-8 weeks or so.

What’s the point of bunion surgery? I have them but they cause no pain as long as I wear the right shoes.

Dr. Kaas is pretty good.

I’d look into barefoot shoes before going for surgery.

I was told I was developing a hammertoe (it is not bent but I guess the ligaments were short and tight and it was causing pain). Doc prescribed an orthotic and suggested zero-drop shoes, which I bought.

I was looking for zero drop shoe recs on DCUM and someone suggested barefoot shoes and that took me down the rabbit hole.

Town center orthopedics offices in Centreville. Fairfax, Reston, and they use Fairfax Hospital. Also Anderson Ortho . Under no circumstances go to Blue Ridge Orthopedics in Warrenton, VA.

Mine have moved to the point where my big toe is slanted so severely (like at a 45 degree angle) that it causes pain, even when I’m laying in bed. I have had them my whole life, as has everyone in my family. I never wear tight or pointy shoes (I have been wearing “comfortable” shoes since childhood).

Some people need surgery, because they have pain even after trying conservative measures, like wearing the right shoes.

Mine hurts even when laying in bed.

For me, it was a year recovery. The pain afterwards was worse until about 6 months into it. Now the big toe is stiff, flexes some, but no longer hurts.

Doctor was great but surgery was awful. I was unable to be weight bearing for 6 weeks, it was 6 months before I felt no pain and a year before I could wear normal shoes. I still can't wear any heel or wedge. I don't have pain now but my balance has never returned, I don't have full range of motion and I had back, hip and leg pain because of the year of walking poorly.

I need to have the other foot done but have been putting off the surgery because it is so awful.

I’m one of the PPs that had surgery on one foot. It was painful, for sure — which is why I waited 25 years to do the next one! I definitely want to get it done before I get too old, though, and the bunion pain is now pretty bad. Dr. Neufeld has a “minimally invasive” surgery that is supposed to be less painful, and I will supposedly be weight-bearing (I was with my other foot). He did say that full recovery is lengthy (unable to run for for quite a while, for example).

How old were you both when getting surgery? I'm pretty convinced that past the age of 40, you shouldn't get this surgery. If you are not super fit and committed to the hard work of getting back into it, then I have just seen a few family members decline and never improve after this surgery.
