We will need to buy a car in the next couple years and as such like to keep an eye on the market to ensure we have enough money ready when needed, as we plan to pay in cash. We plan to buy a lower-end EV crossover or hybrid like the Hyundai Kona or Kia Nero, and have about $40k earmarked for that, which matches current MSRP. Thoughts on whether we are being realistic?
There was just a special on WTOP over the weekend about MSRP versus what people are paying. In the DMV, we are paying more than MSRP. How much more depends on the vehicle. A jeep wrangler is like >8% over MSRP.
We just paid $4,000 over MSRP for a Sienna (MSPR was $44,000 so a little under 10%). The cheapest markup we saw was $750 but the wait was at least a year. Anecdotally some dealerships are not strictly charging a markup anymore but have tons of required extras that are things you might not otherwise buy. It seems to sloowwllly be getting better so I don't know if they would be able to get the same markup in a year.
Bought a Tucson Hybrid last month and paid MSRP (+tax, title and a BS $800 "doc fee") but no other dealership add-ons or other stuff. Also had the option for a RAV4 Hybrid under same non-marked up MSRP terms.
I just read on Edmunds that the average buyer in the US is still paying 5% over list, and even if the car is selling at list, manufacturers are only making vehicles with every option to drive up costs/profits.
If you don’t want a hybrid or PEV it’s a lot better and not msrp.
