Girls swimming. How good is ranked top 100 for your graduating class?

Anonymous
For example, swim cloud recruiting ranking page says 95th for high school class of 202x in the entire state/commonwealth. Is that good enough to... swim in college? Get a division 1 scholarship? I haven't the faintest idea.

I don't think there is a single answer. States vary dramatically in terms of swimming talent depth. Swimcloud has info about how particular times stack up with D1 and D3 teams.

I see. Is there a certain single event that can sort of distill a swimmer's overall talent? I can share that PB time if it helps.

Top 100 in an event or ranked as an overall athlete? Probably good enough to walk on, but I would not expect money.

College recruiting is largely stroke based, so there is no one event that can give you an idea of overall talent for recruiting purposes. By the time recruiting starts swimmers have narrowed in on their best strokes and events and are focusing there. No one cares if an elite breaststroker isn’t good at fly, and vice versa.

I think this is one of the go-to strokes. Is this good?

I think swim cloud combines all the events a swimmer does and spits out some sort of overall power ranking out of all swimmers in that graduating class.

Not really good enough for money— there isn’t a lot of scholarship money in swimming to begin with, and you’ve got to be best of the best. Maybe fast enough to swim in a college, it’s really all dependent of the events where the summer is strong and the events a team needs to fill. 56 in 100 free is good, but not great.

So many factors in this: academics, schools specific needs etc. But I am assuming free is the fastest stroke, then I would expect a girl would need to be going 54 seconds for D3.

There is a big difference between 56.00 and 56.99, but in PVS, amongst 15-18 year olds, that would put you in the 200s (and not even in the top 1000 in the US). This may be good enough for D3, depending on academics and other strokes. You should go to swimcloud.com and do some research.

Didn't you save for college? I don't get expecting a scholarship.

I put on a division 3 school into Swim Cloud and looked at their women’s 100 free times. Depending on how many milliseconds into 56 seconds she is, she’d be between 14-16th fastest freestylers on the team. The top 6 are 53.xx and below.

I’m really sorry to ask this but is this for real? My 8th grader is swimming a 53 low so a 56 is not great unless your kid is younger

Being brutally honest, not especially. We are at a big club and the fastest 11-12 year old girls are already under a minute in the 100 free. The fastest 15-16 year olds are well under 56 seconds.
