Mugging outside Giant at Wheaton Mall while MCPD officers hang out inside the store

I don't understand what MCPD is doing. Why do they have officers stationed inside the store when all these crimes are happening in the parking lot? It's almost like they want these crimes to happen.

MCPD would not station police inside a store. the officers may have been buying something for lunch. or investigating something else. Or Giant hired off duty cops for additional security.

The article you posted says they were at the giant after they got word of a robbery.

That wording in the article is very unclear. It is odd it does not say they arrived after the robbery, it says they were there.

And I have been to that Giant three times in the last week and NCOD officers have been standing INSIDE by the entrance near the produce section each time. I don't see the point.

Well, then, giant may have hired them on secondary employment and told them to stand in that area.

Giant routinely hires off duty LE as security guards for the inside of the store throughout the DMV. It sounds like they need additional security for the parking lot as well. Very sad to have attacks on the most vulnerable in broad daylight. Contact the store and request better security.

MCPD doesn’t station officers at stores.

The article clearly says they arrived AFTER a report of a robbery. Read it again.

If you want more officers, reach out to the council. Tell them to treat MCPD better so they can attract more recruits to fill the many vacancies.

But sheesh, when you check the police dispatch log, the police get called there almost every day. All different times of day.

Elrich too. It was his brilliant task force to reimagine public safety that recommended reducing patrol staffing by 50% in Wheaton and Silver Spring. And Wheaton's current officer vacancy rate in patrol is almost 18%. It's the worst in the county.

They are recruiting just fine with the new bonus, they have said so themselves. We'll see of the recruits are any good, I'm doubtful. MCPD refuses to do their jobs because 2 out of 11 councilmembers are critical of them which does not inspire a lot of confidence. I don't think the problem is the council, that is a lame excuse. If an org can't attract people it's more likely a problem inside the org.

Aren't you all glad you voted for him? Thanks MoCo lib boomers. The lady who got pushed and robbed probably even voted for him.

I've also seen uniformed MCPD officers inside Dick's sporting goods at Wheaton Mall and a MCPD car right outside the entrance to the store. Not lately though.

I think I’ve seen you here before…

Are you the poster who refuses to see the impact anti-police vitriol can have on a department?

We are living that reality right now. Yes, recruitment is up because they advertised a $20K bonus, just like other departments in the region have been doing for a while now. Numbers STILL aren’t where they should be because there is a stigma against this county.
