hayfield secondary school

hallo to everybody,
we are moving soon from a country in Southeast Europe to America. we are coming because of my husband's work.he will be working near the white house. we are looking to buy a house and we like alexandria, virginia. the houses we saw belong to highfield secondary school. the son will start the 7th and the daughter 5thgrade. both are excellent students, the son is interested in mathematics, and daughter in arts. I would be very grateful if someone could tell me what Hayfield school is like. children will live outside our country for the first time. thay have never been in US. English is their second language and they speak it well but not very well. Thank you all in advance for your help

It’s a very large and diverse school. I have a friend whose child goes there for high school (after attending Procare parochial school through 8th grade). Her child is into the arts and theater. They seem satisfied with Hayfield.

FYI I requested this get moved into the FCPS forum b/c you'll get a bunch more feedback there since it's an FCPS school.

Your kids need to take all honors classes. Period. The regular level classes have a lot of disruptive behavior problems from kids who aren't there to learn.

This is dumb advice. Children who don't speak English well won't be able to access honors courses. They will be enrolled in ESOL courses of some kind--self contained or team taught depending how they test in.

That applies to any public school nowadays.

Langley, McLean, Oakton and other HS pyramids (with a good academic ranking) would be a good place to start while considering neighborhoods that would fit your budget and commute.

I have 2 students at Hayfield SS and I’m very happy with the school. Some teachers are better than others, but that’s the same everywhere.

With kids in 5th and 7th grade who already speak English well, they will do just fine.
